Iowa State faculty vote to keep new diversity graduation requirement despite new state law

An Iowa State University faculty vote this week preserved updates to a graduation requirement of all the university's undergraduate students, though there's not yet a timeline for when those updates will take effect.
The university's provost and some faculty counted the updates to the U.S. diversity course requirement as a win, though the process of getting there was full of twists and turns and not everyone got everything they wanted.
The U.S. diversity requirement, first approved in 1996, mandates that students take course work to give students experience with "significant manifestations of human diversity and provide students with insights that enhance their understanding of diversity among people in the U.S.," according to the university's description.
