Job Description

Summary

The Department of Surgery is seeking an enthusiastic Staff Scientist that manages and coordinates the activities of a Baylor College of Medicine laboratory to assist faculty in teaching and/or research programs in the Department of Surgery – Division of Surgical Oncology. The Staff Scientist consults with faculty to determine equipment purchase priorities based on budget, condition of existing equipment, and scheduled laboratory activities. Ensures accurate data collection, documentation, organization, and safety of research activities.

Job Duties

  • Consults with faculty to determine equipment purchase priorities based on budget, condition of existing equipment, and scheduled laboratory activities.
  • Prepares and puts in place equipment scheduled for use. 
  • Demonstrates use and care of equipment to research personnel in the laboratory. 
  • Mintains research databases using scientific software.
  • Arranges service calls for equipment and orders laboratory supplies. 
  • Dianoses equipment malfunctions and dismantles and repairs equipment, applying knowledge of shop mechanics and using gauges, meters, hand tools, and power tools.
  • Confers with faculty periodically to evaluate new equipment and methods.
  • Serves as biosafety officer for the laboratory or department.
  • Supervises laboratory personnel in a variety of laboratory duties.
  • Plans, directs, and conducts research experiments as well as evaluating and analyzing data. 
  • Conducts literature searches and summarize information in an appropriate format for a particular study.
  • Supervises, schedulse and coordinates the activities of less experienced staff.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctoral Degree. Experience may not be substituted in lieu of degree.
  • Three years of post doctoral research experience.
