Job Description

Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time. : The Materials and Failure Modeling Department is looking for a highly motivated and productive individual to work in a dynamic multidisciplinary teaming environment, with a focus on simulating the shock response of heterogeneous materials using explicit 3D microstructures. Specifically, for this role, the candidate will make inferences on realistic material behavior at millimeter length scales, while resolving microstructural features down to tens of microns in size. There will be a strong emphasis on simulating energetic materials (both inert and reactive), and you will work alongside experienced staff running hydrocodes and fitting material models and equation of state. In this role, you will also be responsible for demonstrating credible simulation results to be compared to the measured experimental datasets; you will also develop and apply novel post processing techniques, including probability distribution functions or dimensionality reduction algorithms, to the fluctuating 3D output field data, in addition to other 3D visualizations. There will be interactions with software development teams, image analysts, and you will utilize the high-performance computing resources available at a National Laboratory. There are significant opportunities for an early career PhD to work on challenging problems that will yield impactful results in archival journal publications. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Work with the mentorship of Sandia staff to perform world-class research focused on running large 3D simulations with explicit microstructures, including shock wave propagation and shock interactions with the microstructure, via the hydrocode CTH. + Develop and apply novel post processing techniques for large 3D spatio-temporal datasets, to inform higher fidelity continuum shock hydrocodes and material models. + Work closely with subject matter experts, software developers, and experimentalists. + Publish and present results to the scientific community through technical conferences and peer-reviewed journals. + Develop laboratory-wide collaborations across multiple Sandia organizations and work as part of a multi-disciplinary team. + Perform all duties in compliance with operational safety, security, and quality guidelines. + PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field + Experience in computer programming and code development with Python or MatLab + Excellent written and oral communication skills as evidenced by conference presentations and journal publications + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-clearance

+ Background includes understanding of shock physics concepts: Rankine-Hugoniot, Chapman-Jouguet, and Mie-Gruneisen equation of state + Experience running at least one 2D or higher engineering code (e.g., any FEA or finite difference code, COMSOL, Ansys Fluent, Abaqus, etc.) + Prior research experience in mesoscale modeling and simulation, preferably in high-rate impact and shock regimes + Familiarity of methods for random heterogeneous materials, including the representative volume element and image reconstruction techniques + Familiarity using Linux and writing Bash scripts to automate processes and workflows + Skill in interfacing with high-performance computing resources + Strong ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team setting

The Materials and Failure Modeling Department 1558 performs material mechanics R&D, develops advanced engineering models, and deploys state-of-the-art computational capabilities to enable physically credible prediction of material behavior and failure in support of Sandia’s mission. Focus areas of the department include adaptive material and failure models, robust computational material library covering events from aging to shock physics, effective model calibration methodologies, and quantification of margin and uncertainty of material models.
