Job Description

The Applied Materials Division at Argonne National Laboratory has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral appointee.   The candidate will develop physics-based crystal plasticity models for the mechanical properties of high temperature metallic materials fabricated with advanced manufacturing processes.

The candidate will work with a multidisciplinary team to develop crystal plasticity material models using an existing simulation framework.  This will require inventing or adapting material models to describe the unique characteristics of metallic materials fabricated with processes like Power Bed Fusion, Directed Energy Deposition, Diffusion Bonding, and others.  The candidate will help draft and publish technical reports, conference paper, and journal publications describing the research and will be expected to attend and present at technical conferences.

Position Requirements

  • The prospective candidate is expected to hold a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, materials science, civil engineering, structural engineering, or a closely related field.

  • Experience with crystal plasticity methods.

  • Specific experience developing and implementing material models.

  • Skills in oral and written communications and presentations at all levels of the organization.

  • A successful candidate must have the ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using the MOOSE simulation framework.

  • Some background in optimization approaches for calibrating material models against test data.

  • Coding experience in C++ and python.

  • Experience with the Torch and/or Pyro frameworks.
