Job Description

Summary

The Benham-Pyle Laboratory in the Center for Cell and Gene Therapy and Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine Center hosts an intensive ten-week undergraduate research program. Selected students paired with an experienced scientific mentor and assigned a research project focused on the regulation of stem cells in response to DNA damage or the regulation of planarian asexual reproduction. They will learn how to use RNAi to test the function of genes expressed in cell types of interest and how to visualize gene expression patterns in the animal using whole mount in situ hybridization. Students will also meet to discuss historical and current papers relevant to their research. At the end of the program, each summer student presents their findings to peers, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty from the Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine Center.

Job Duties

  • Works with a highly experienced mentor where they will contribute to ongoing research studies. Students will
    • learns the basics of laboratory safety and etiquette as well as proper experimental design and planarian animal husbandry. 
    • completes training in methods from Developmental and Cell Biology, including RNAi gene depletion, whole animal in situ hybridization, PCR/cloning, and bright field and fluorescence microscopy.
  • Participates in weekly lab meetings and journal clubs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a High School or College Student (undergraduate or graduate).
  • No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Students 18y and older are eligible for the position with preferred undergraduate experience.
