Postdoctoral Appointee – Development of high-pressure instrumentation for the upgraded Advanced Photon Source

Argonne National Laboratory

Lemont, IL

Job posting number: #7112371 (Ref:414173)

Application Deadline: Open Until Filled

Job Description

The X-ray Science Division (XSD) seeks a Postdoctoral Appointee to contribute to the development of high-pressure instrumentation to generate multi-Mbar pressures, in order to realize the full potential of the Advanced Photon Source upgrade (APS-U). The sub-micron x-ray beam size enabled by the low emittance APS-U storage ring and state of the art x-ray optics will strongly benefit high pressure research, potentially allowing to probe electronic, magnetic, and structural order at the limits of static high-pressure generation. The successful candidate will primarily employ fabrication methods available in the Center for Nanoscale Materials (CNM) to tailor the high-pressure sample environment in diamond anvil cells. To this end, two main avenues will be pursued: the design and machining of shapes on the diamond tip, which will allow reaching multi-Mbar pressures; and the deposition of designed electrical circuits, creating advanced multi-modal experiments that combine electrical transport with x-ray techniques. These developments will continue throughout the APS dark year (April 2023-April 2024) with the goal of full beamline deployment with first light in APS-U. Experiments will focus on strongly correlated and topological systems using x-ray spectroscopy and scattering probes, primarily carried out at the APS-U POLAR and HPCAT beamlines.

Position Requirements

Required:

  • Ph.D. in Physics, Material Science, Chemistry, or related field within the last three years.
  • Experience with high pressure diamond anvil cell technology and/or nanofabrication tools (particularly focused ion beam and lithography).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skill of scientific results.

Preferred:

  • Experience with x-ray techniques and/or synchrotron experiments.
  • Familiarity with finite element modeling of mechanical systems.
  • Background in condensed matter physics.
  • Familiarity with scientific programing languages such as python
