Job Description

Summary

The Wythe lab is currently looking for a Project Intern for the Spring and Summer of 2022. The ideal candidate will preferably have completed relevant coursework in genetics, chemistry, and biology and corresponding laboratory courses. We seek a highly motivated, organized, and curious student who is interested in biomedical research and learning the basics of molecular biology and model system-based research into the causes and consequences of vascular-related diseases (with a focus on the cerebrovasculature). 

 

If applicable, those with strong math and statistical skills will have the opportunity to work on a bioinformatics based project studying gene expression and epigenetic regulation within the brain vasculature in healthy and diseased states, such as glioblastoma, or CADASIL, or brain arteriovenous malformations. This position will initially be in a support role to further research projects, and requires a person who is punctual, and can maintain consistent, regular hours, takes direction well, works well with others, and is comfortable in a laboratory environment and respectful of others.

 

Interns are expected to be available for a minimum of 3, 3-4 hour shifts per week (occurring sometime between the hours of 9 am and 6 pm to maximize interaction with other lab members). This is the perfect opportunity for trainees interested in gaining wet lab / actual bench experience prior to matriculating to graduate or medical school.

Job Duties

  • Masters and executes standard daily tasks within the lab (solution making and basic chemistry, media preparation, etc) and initially focuses on building skills in molecular biology (recombinant DNA cloning technologies, PCR, etc) and basic biochemistry (SDS-PAGE and Western blot).

 

  • Works with animal models (zebrafish or mice) given successful mastery of these essential skills, in addition to working with cell culture systems (preference will be given to students (master's or undergraduate) that are studying in the Houston area, to ensure their continued activity in the lab during the summer and school year).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a High School or College Student (undergraduate or graduate).
  • No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • General biology, chemistry, genetics and biochemistry courses, as well as associated laboratories.
  • Molecular biology courses, and advanced independent research experience.
  • Comfortable working with laboratory mice and zebrafish / performing animal work.
