Job Description


The Department of Molecular & Human Genetics is seeking a full-time candidate to support optimization and increased throughput of a new Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) platform. The technologist will perform high complexity molecular tests while adhering to CAP and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) guidelines. Candidate must be detail-oriented and able to exercise independent judgement as they will be working independently several days per week post-training.


 Monday-Friday 08:00-17:00 during training (~6 months) with a late start, alternative weekend schedule thereafter (TBD)

Job Duties

  • Performs and analyzes samples in the production pipeline as well as research projects using validated methods and procedures in accordance with accreditation standards and guidelines. 
  • Aids in protocol development and optimization.
  • Follows laboratory quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, and monitors and maintains reagents, log records, and laboratory equipment.
  • Identifies issues with samples and instruments, effectively troubleshooting and relaying those issues to the appropriate authority.
  • Updates sample tracking information and summarizes results in an appropriate format.
  • Requests supplies, repairs, and other needs effectively.
  • •Adherence to CAP/CLIA and HIPAA compliance, laboratory safety, and OSHA policies and procedures is essential.
  • Once trained, will work independently on an alternative work schedule.
  • Light physical exertion. Must be able to lift up to 30 lbs. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Molecular Genetics Technology or related field.
  • No experience required.
  • Certified Laboratory Professional by National Committee on Accreditation (NCA), Certified Medical Laboratory Technician by American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent certification. Certification must be obtained within one year of hire or promotion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MB (ASCP) certification 
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: DNA/RNA manipulations such as purification and qualification, PCR, qPCR, restriction enzyme digestion, and NGS library construction such as RNASeq and Whole Genome Sequencing.
  • Previous experience in a CAP/CLIA/New York State laboratory setting.
