Position Summary
The University of Memphis, Department of Anthropology, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Anthropology with a specialization in Medical Anthropology, and a focus on minority health and health disparities. Research interests and geographic specialization are open. Candidates with research in immigrant health, disability, substance use, and mental health preferred. We particularly encourage applications from scholars working in traditions of applied, engaged, public and activist anthropology. The position will begin August 2023.
The U of Memphis offers a BA and a nationally recognized MA program in Applied Sociocultural Anthropology, established in 1976, and a concentration in Medical Anthropology. The U of Memphis is a public, urban-serving Carnegie 1 University and the Department of Anthropology is committed to working with and being sensitive to the educational needs of students from diverse backgrounds.

Qualifications include a PhD in anthropology in hand by June 1, 2023. The successful candidate will contribute to teaching classroom-based undergraduate/graduate courses including Intro to Biological Anthropology and Prehistory and/or Intro to Cultural Anthropology, as well as required and elective medical anthropology courses listed in our BA and MA curriculum. They will also contribute to teaching one or both of the graduate seminars, Biocultural Epidemiology and Critically Applied Medical Anthropology, and will have opportunities to develop in-person and online courses based on their expertise. Must demonstrate a commitment to developing local research relationships and outreach through engaged scholarship and/or student placements in local research opportunities, mentoring graduate students in applying anthropology and in the three-year integrated MA/MPH, and willingness to seek external funding.
