Job Description

Posting Duration: This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time. NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs: If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs. If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date. What Your Job Will Be Like: We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to develop physics models and computational methods for the simulation of organic materials in fire environments. The researcher will develop new multi-physics models and implement their models in Sandia simulation codes. Applications of particular interest are the response of organic materials in fire environments and decomposition of foam/composite materials. Successful researchers will be able to expand these modeling capabilities to impact several of Sandia’s key mission areas, including nuclear stockpile safety and energy security. External publication of research and analysis work is encouraged. Members of our department interact closely with engineers and other researchers and analysts across the California and New Mexico sites. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Work on several projects concurrently and must work across several diverse teams + Implement new multi-physics models in Sandia simulation codes and work with analysts and experimentalists + Expand modeling capabilities to impact several of Sandia’s key mission areas, including nuclear stockpile safety and energy security + Interact closely with engineers and other researchers and analysts across the California and New Mexico sites + Validate, post-process, and analyze numerical results Applicants on this requisition may be interviewed by multiple organizations at Sandia National Laboratories. The selected applicant can be a virtual worker located in any U.S. State or District of Columbia. Regular or periodic travel to your assigned work location may be required. Qualifications We Require: + Ph.D. degree in aerospace, mechanical, material science, computer science, applied mathematics, or a closely related field + Knowledge of compiled programming languages (ex: C++) + Experience in implementing physics models in existing code bases + Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q security clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Knowledge and experience with computational modeling of pyrolysis chemistry, high temperature heat transfer, and multiphase flows + Experience with data-driven model development (ex: Sparse Regression, ANNs, …) + Background in applied math About Our Team: Sandia/California's Thermal/Fluid Science and Engineering Department is a diverse multidisciplinary community of engineers and researchers who specialize in fluid mechanics and heat and mass transfer. The work mix in the group includes theory and modeling, scientific and high-performance computing, and applied engineering analysis of experiments and mechanical designs. The group plays two primary roles in science-based engineering at Sandia: + developing new computational methods, capabilities and tools to describe fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and thermal response; + performing computational analysis to predict the design performance of engineered systems in defense, energy, and industry applications. Recent activities and R&D areas within the group include: heat transfer and fluid dynamics modeling and analysis for complex multi-material systems, porous media reacting flow, multi-phase flow, turbulent heat transfer, fire and combustion, hydrogen storage and safety technology, wind energy modeling and technology development, geothermal energy technology, contributions to emerging capability and development of the Sandia's climate change initiatives and strategy, and applied uncertainty quantification and verification and validation for all of these application areas.
