Position Summary

Provides quality patient care and family training through evaluation, treatment planning, and the application and assignment of occupational therapy modalities and procedures in accordance with the regulations governing the practice of Occupational Therapy and in accordance with the philosophy and policies of the City of Hope National Medical Center. Serves as a rehabilitation consultant for complex patients facilitating innovative and efficient treatment intervention. Is responsible for student internships, clinical education, and developing clinical programs and treatment protocols. Actively participates in academic, clinical research, community projects and coordinates outpatient rehabilitation program.

Key Responsibilities include:

PATIENT ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT

  • Screens patients to determine need for intervention and initiates referrals as appropriate.
  • Evaluates patients using appropriate age specific tools. Interprets data using advanced level skills.
  • Demonstrates advanced level skills and creativity in developing treatment goals and plans based on evaluation data, rehabilitation potential, discharge plans, and in coordination with goals and plans of patient, family and other care team members.
  • Demonstrates advanced level skill and creativity in implementing patient treatment programs which are safe, effective, and efficient.
  • Demonstrates advanced level skills in modifying treatment plans according to patient needs and progress, terminates treatment appropriately, and develops appropriate discharge and post discharge plans.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform literature searches, communicates with experts in field and uses other resources (internal and external) to use in the development of patients’ care strategies, departmental programs.
  • Completes evaluations, progress notes, reassessments, discharge summaries, and third-party reimbursement reports per established departmental, institutional and regulatory requirements within required time frames.

Leadership

  • Assigns treatments to occupational therapy assistants, aides, and volunteers. Assesses quality of care provided.
  • Pursues professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to maintain certification/licensure, and/or keep abreast of latest trends in field; provides education to staff following attendance at seminars, workshops, conferences.
  • Acts as a preceptor to occupational therapy and occupational therapy assistant students at a minimum of 1 time per year as students are available.

Clinical Specialist/Program Development

  • Collaborates inter and intra-departmentally for performance improvement projects
  • Assists other departments with referral process to ensure patients are referred to Rehabilitation Services appropriately
  • Facilitates innovative/creative solutions for the provision of care.
  • Assists in the development of new business and growth of existing business as needs arise.
  • Plans/develops new therapy procedures/protocols necessary to meet the changing needs of the patient population.
  • Monitors existing programs and modifies as necessary to achieve maximal patient outcomes.

CLINICAL EDUCATION

  • Coordinates/provides in-services to staff as directed based on department needs.
  • Oversight of student program planning to ensure needs of student/clinical instructors are met.
  • Guides/assists therapists with student issues.
  • Responsible for mentoring students/new employees.

Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

  • Minimum Education: Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited school
  • Minimum Experience: 4 years of recent occupational therapy experience Leadership experience

Required Certification/Licensure:

  • Current Occupational Therapist license in the State of California, or licensed applicant status in the state of California.
  • CPR Certification
  • For pediatric service, CCS Panel provider or complete application within 60 days of hire or when hours attained.

Preferred education experience and skills:

  • Doctor of Occupational Therapy from an accredited school
  • Acute care setting.

Salary / Pay Rate Information:
Pay Rate: $43.91 - $70.25 / hour
