Position Summary

Functions as an integral member of the Clinical Research Unit research team by assisting patients and family members in linking to resources, problem-solving and navigating through the continuum of care. Functions as a liaison between ancillary departments and research to enhance the care experience of patients and families. Acts as a resource for information, assistance and problem resolution throughout the patient experience at City of Hope. Collaborates with members of the Clinical Research Study Team and other City of Hope staff in enhancing and improving systems and processes that impact the care experience of patients and families while enrolled in a clinical trial.Creates sustainable practices for ensuring all Phase 1 assigned clinical trial patients are evaluated to identify resource needs and potential barriers that may impact clinical trial compliance. Creates metrics and dashboards that track patients’ required/requested resources, and presents data and outcomes to Research Operations Leadership. Creates, evaluates, and validates new tools to ensure quality assessment for clinical trial patients. The Clinical Research Unit and COH network research hubs under the auspices of City of Hope’s Research Operations, utilize a staff leadership model, and every employee is expected to take a leadership role in enhancing the patient experience. The Clinical Research Program Navigator (CRPN) is actively involved with clinical research patients diagnosed with cancer and treated in the CRU (Clinical Research Unit). This position also includes active participation in marketing, educational and group programs, program development and fundraising efforts, and outreach to patients, families, other City of Hope departments, and the community.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Contacts new patients to introduce the patient navigator role and arrange the initial meeting.
  • Orients patients and families to City of Hope’s clinical research program, informing them of available services and resources.
  • Provides education, practical information, and support. Provides tours of treatment areas as appropriate.
  • Identifies needs of patients and families through discussion and/or review of bio-psychosocial screening form.
  • Is subject to situations involving grief/bereavement processes and end-of-life-related issues.
  • Actively assists patients and families with problem resolution, intervening directly when appropriate and/or triaging to the appropriate individual or department.
  • Follows up with patient, family, and/or staff to ensure that identified needs have been addressed and any problems resolved.
  • Responsible for calling all patients the day after treatment to monitor progress and determine if any additional resources are needed to address questions.
  • Contact patients, at risk for non-compliance, prior to their appointments to confirm their appointment (s) and verify their understanding as well as identify any barriers which may interfere with their appointments.
  • Patient communications will be documented in the patient’s record.
  • Works closely with COH appointment schedulers, clinic staff, and the clinical research staff and coordinates the most efficient schedule for clinical research patients.
  • Escorts patients and families to the clinic when needed or arranges for volunteer escort. Provides tours of areas pertinent to patient care.
  • Reaches out to patients and families in clinic waiting rooms, clinic exam rooms, inpatient units, or by phone and other areas to promote awareness of available support.
  • Collaborates with members of the Clinical Research Study Team, the Patient Advocate, and other City of Hope staff in identifying barriers encountered by City of Hope patients and their families, recommending system improvements, and implementing changes that enhance the care experience.
  • Collaborates with the clinical research study team, and develops a database to capture patients who are being navigated by the CRPN. Develops metrics to track patient satisfaction and to identify areas of improvement.
  • Collaborates with program evaluators and other team members in evaluating services and using findings to achieve excellence.

Basic education, experience, and skills required for consideration:

  • Must have a Bachelor's Degree and five or more years of experience working in a hospital/healthcare setting and interacting collaboratively with medical teams.
  • Has strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrate skills in written and verbal communication including good phone etiquette.
  • Exhibit good problem-solving skills.
  • Has the ability to organize and manage multiple tasks/projects simultaneously.
  • Will demonstrate grace under pressure.
  • Display sensitivity to patient care and privacy.
  • Provide sensitivity to cultural needs.
  • Has knowledge of patient/resource boundaries.
  • Possess the ability to communicate highly technical information in layperson’s terms.
  • Able to foster and promote a positive image and professionalism.

Preferred education, experience, and skills:

  • Master’s Degree in Health or Health-related field.
  • Knowledge of oncology health care and psychosocial needs of cancer patients and their families, preferred.
  • Previous grant and/or clinical trial experience.
  • Medical Terminology training or training within 6 months of hire.

Salary / Pay Rate Information:
Pay Rate: $25.27 - $39.17 / hour
