Argonne's Environmental Science division is seeking a Computational Climate Scientist to join their team.

In this role you can expect to participate in the evolving computational research aimed at developing high performance computational models of atmospheric turbulence. Develop modeling products with a focus on LES scale modeling of flow and thermodynamics of Urban Canyons and other complex terrains. Develop DNS models of turbulence and cloud processes using computational fluid dynamic models on HPC clusters at the DOE Leadership computing facilities.

Responsibilities

• Perform sound technical analyses and develop numerical models of atmospheric turbulence and mixing in the atmospheric boundary layer.
• Strengthen and produce high-quality products on schedule and within budget;
• Foster inter-disciplinary research by developing collaborative programs with computational and mathematical scientists at Argonne and UIUC
• Promote strategic research development and application initiatives in the area of regional climate modeling by contributing to the section`s support of the development of new projects or programs
• Publish research findings in peer reviewed journals and attend international and national conferences on regional climate modeling
• Safety, Security, and Environmental Protection: All activities, as they apply to work performed by self or by personnel under supervision, will be executed in compliance with ES&H and security responsibilities established by Argonne National Laboratory's ES&H policies, Safeguards and Security policies, work rules, and safe practices.

Position Requirements

• Knowledge of advanced computational fluid dynamic models and atmospheric modeling applications.
• Experience testing and running numerical models on Leadership class computing facilities.
• Skill in evaluating model results compared to observations and extracting scientific insight from the comparisons.
• Effective in oral and written communications with a wide variety of audiences.
• Effective interpersonal relations.
• Ability in mastering new ideas, techniques and methodologies, and adapting them to current research and assessment problems.
• Skill in assessing the technical capabilities of individuals and matching individuals with tasks.
• Knowledge of atmospheric turbulence, atmospheric boundary layer processes.
• Ability to identify new research areas.
• Knowledge of urban scale atmospheric modeling and some skill in processing and evaluation of experimental data sets.
• Ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.
• RD2: Bachelor's and 5+ years of experience, or a Master's and 3+ years of experience, or a PhD and 0+ years of experience, or equivalent
