What Your Job Will Be Like: Our team is seeking a laboratory support technologist to support the Precision Cleaning Development Laboratory in developing, characterizing, and supporting surface preparation activities for the Labs. This role requires the performance of a variety of duties in such areas as operation of instrumentation, computer applications, testing, and scientific data collection. The successful candidate will be responsible for contributing the day-to-day operation of the lab, as well as supporting a growing R&D portfolio. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Interface with Subject Matter Experts and Product Engineers to understand the materials for which they are responsible, and their surface preparation needs + Lead or assist with the development of new or modified methodologies to clean, prep, characterize and deliver desired material’s surfaces to our customers through both quick-turn and longer-term projects + Develop new strategies and methodologies to collect, maintain and implement process controls for surface prep. technologies + Communicate the results of new methodologies to customers and/or the external public through presentations, reports and conference presentations + Perform on-the-job training provided by senior staff and technologists, and through external training, to provide support for activities that range from basic materials science research to applied engineering materials characterization that is integral to Sandia’s national security mission + Be responsible for maintaining a culture of engineered safety, support the development and documentation of safety systems used in laboratory activities that include operating procedures and the drafting of work documents as, e.g., primary hazard screening and standard operating procedures Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant will be required to work onsite in Albuquerque, NM. Some travel will be required for this position. Salary Range: $56,100 - $107,800 *Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential. Qualifications We Require: + Associate’s in the physical sciences, engineering, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience + Experience with hazardous chemicals and materials (such as solvents and acids/bases) + Able to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Bachelor’s degree in the physical sciences or engineering + Demonstrated proficiency in the use of standard Microsoft Office software including Word, Excel and PowerPoint + Experience working with customers to determine the content of executable work requests, prepare documents of procedure/techniques, and prepare reports of results to customers that may include written text, data, and image files with basic analysis + Demonstrated experience with Python, MATLAB, LabView and other scientific programming languages + Demonstrated experience with hands-on prototyping of tools, fixtures, etc. + Ability to work in a multifunctional team of scientists with a broad range of backgrounds + A genuine scientific curiosity and passion for contributing towards answering ‘big questions’ in science and engineering About Our Team: The Materials Characterization & Performance Department supports Sandia by developing and applying a breadth of analytical techniques to assess the structure, composition, and properties of materials. We serve our customers by helping them understand material behavior and performance, develop improved materials for specific components and applications, as well as develop lifetime performance predictions for materials. By applying a breadth of techniques, including spectroscopic and diffraction techniques, light and electron microscopy, metallography, surface analysis, chemical analysis, and contaminant analysis, we provide materials understanding and solutions for: engineering components and structures, failure analysis of all types of materials, and research projects across a wide customer base. We serve the entire corporation in their material analysis needs and frequently other federal agencies and industry. Position Information: This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years. Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
