Job Description

Role Overview

  • The Process Engineering Manager is accountable for effective management and delivery of Process Equipment, Process services and ancillary equipment for the Building 5 program. The Process Engineering Manager will provide engineering leadership and oversight on the Building 5 capital program according to the CPA agreed timings, costs and outcomes. The role is responsible for identifying key risks and presenting issues, recommendations and updates to the appropriate governance forum or process.  The Process Engineering Manager will also assist in developing project or business strategies as required by their programs. The Process Engineering Manager will ultimately be accountable for the technical delivery for the respective projects within the B5 Program.

Major duties and responsibilities

  • Acts as technical/functional expert providing guidance and oversight to direct reports and other teams within department for own applicable discipline and acquires knowledge in related disciplines

  • Identifies existing process/product improvements and may develop innovative, advanced new concepts that improve the department’s  work processes/products

  • Manages and leads people, technological and financial resources for multiple projects and on-going work activities of moderate complexity within department typically involving  cross-functional representatives

  • Solves complex problems within area of expertise and outside of own department

  • Accountable for technical decisions which primarily impact own department short term to midterm objectives

  • Solicits input and explains difficult concepts while persuading others to adopt a point of view; Shares own point of view and rationale

  • Provide leadership to cross-function teams by defining clear, realistic goals and strategies. Lead the removal of barriers to ensure project progress. Facilitate rapid decision-making to support project delivery.

  • Lead the development of the project plan and project schedules for projects such as design, construction & Commissioning.

  • Facilitate the management of resources in alignment with the approved project plan. Foresee and directly handle project resource issues. Proactively raise personnel issues, such as performance, directly with functional management.

  • Provide oversight for the generation of user requirement specifications and other design documentation of utility equipment, facilities and services.

  • Facilitate the selection and oversee procurement of equipment, facilities, architectural and engineering (A&E) services and principal contractor(s)/construction manager(s).

  • Undertake critical review of Facility/Utilities and services design, implementation, and operation of the project to ensure they deliver appropriate, reliable and safe functionality through to commercial manufacture.

  • Organize, lead and facilitate effective project meetings.  Identify, delegate and facilitate action items to completion.  Identifies and resolve project issues (if required elevate to higher management).

  • Provide technical support, strategic direction and development of the project through to commercial manufacture.

  • Ensure related maintenance, calibration, commissioning, validation and all project activities comply with safety (regulated and internal) standards.

  • Ensure the systems are maintained in a GMP compliant state and that GEP as robustness, reliability, safety and efficiency apply.

  • Provide weekly/ monthly project updates and present to site leadership as necessary.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Engineering Qualifications, bachelor’s degree is a requirement, Masters degrees are preferred
  • Experience in a Pharmaceutical environment / sterile injectable an advantage
  • Project Management Skills

  • Planning techniques including use of MS Project
  • People Management Skills

Personal Competencies

  • 10+ years experience as a Project Engineer/Engineering Project Manager 
  • Successfully lead at least one project from concept through launch
  • Ability to lead, champion, analyze and defend their assigned projects.
  • A good understanding of EHS requirements
  • A willingness to investigate and consider alternatives
  • A good understanding of cGMP principles and requirements
  • Proactive approach
  • Able to be self directed, to work as part of, or form teams
  • Able to influence key stake holders
  • Able to motivate, mentor and sponsor at all levels
  • Ability to understand and appreciate business goals beyond immediate team
  • Will work in a supportive manner with all other Engineering Project Managers & Engineers
  • Works to agreed timelines, budget, and quality expectations
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at same time
  • Excellent written and verbal skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively to all levels of the business

Organisational Relationships

  • The Process Engineering Manager is responsible for providing guidance and support to staff to ensure project deliverables are being met within the agreed upon business plan and a culture of continuous improvement is maintained.
  • The Process Engineering Manager has the authority to create cross-functional action plans, delegate tasks to functional groups and Team Members. 
  • Liaise directly with project managers responsible for the key projects in the capital program.
  • Detail the key internal relationships and contacts that the position will liaise and consult with Internal (Quality Department, Other Engineering Groups, Production, EHS Department, Regulatory, QC. etc.) and External (Suppliers, Statutory Authorities, Contractors, cGMP Inspectors and Auditors) to facilitate, design and execute projects and changes.
  • Establish strong working relationships and trust with customers to foster an open and collaborative team environment.
  • Demonstrate personal leadership and commitment to project delivery
  • Prepare performance objectives and development plans for staff and conduct regular appraisals
  • Help to ensure the Project members operate effectively as a team
  • Assist with the recruitment of staff as required
  • Delegate effectively by providing the necessary information and support
  • Work closely with other functional areas, including API (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient) Sourcing, Intellectual Property, Regulatory Affairs, Quality Assurance, Microbiology, Clinical, Commercial, Supply Chain and Production.

Financial Accountability

  • Manage and control project budgets to agreed levels, manage and highlight exceptional items appropriately, and provide regular and detailed review of performance to budget and forecasts for project budgets. 
  • Deliver projects to agreed scope and timelines, meeting all requisite regulatory, statutory and cGMP expectations.
