What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a highly motivated Systems Engineer to become the W76-1/-2 Technical Basis Realization Team (TBRT) Lead. Our team executes design, development, qualification, and sustainment activities associated with the W76-1/-2 weapon systems. In this impactful and rewarding role, you will be responsible for, and must be cognizant of, all aspects of engineering work at SNL pertaining to the W76-1/-2 systems and their annual assessment. This may include preparing and delivering programmatic and technical presentations, directing efforts from component organizations that support the annual assessment, and assisting in writing the annual assessment report. As the TBRT Lead, you will be the primary interface to numerous component teams and Surveillance organizations who perform technical basis work on behalf of the W76-1/-2 weapon system.

On any given day, the W76-1/-2 TBRT Lead may be called on to:

  • Partner with the Weapon System Lead to guide a high-performing, dynamic and multi-disciplinary team in carrying out the stewardship mission for the W76-1/-2 Stockpile Systems.
  • Shape the overall technical basis strategy for supporting annual assessment. This includes the current annual assessment efforts as well as constructing the future-looking strategy for technical basis throughout the lifetime of the W76-1/-2 weapon systems.
  • Maintain cognizance of current hardware and software infrastructure, and plan for future resources needed to support sustainment of the W76-1/-2 Stockpile System.
  • Team with peer TBRT leads on other programs at both SNL/NM and SNL/CA to address cross-cutting topics of interest.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and subject matter experts to successfully investigate anomalies and resolve system related issues.
  • Engage and team with numerous groups both internal and external to Sandia (e.g., component engineers, surveillance, independent assessment, military liaison, system surety, nuclear safety, technical subject matter experts) as well as external agencies (Navy Strategic Systems Programs (SP), National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Kansas City National Security Campus (KSNSC), Pantex Production, and DoD contractors).

The successful candidate will become intimately familiar with the detailed function of W76-1/-2 nuclear weapon components, subsystems, and systems, and will have the opportunity to exercise investigative freedom in engaging the broad Nuclear Weapons community.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant will be required to work onsite in Albuquerque, NM. Some travel to locations including, but not limited to Livermore, CA; Los Alamos, NM; Amarillo, TX; Washington, DC; and Kansas City, MO is required for this position.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Master’s degree in Engineering or a relevant STEM discipline, plus (1) one year of professional experience; OR Bachelor’s degree in stated field, plus (5) five years of experience; OR equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of the job.
  • Active DOE Q clearance (or DOD Top Secret clearance), with ability to participate, as requested, in random polygraph testing.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in Electrical Engineering or equivalent electrical engineering experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of nuclear weapon systems, including a fundamental understanding of nuclear surety principles.
  • A commitment to fostering a culturally and technically diverse atmosphere.
  • Self-motivated, positive individual comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to integrate into and work effectively across multiple technical teams and with management.
  • Experience using engineering principles to conduct trade studies to identify system solutions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare and deliver presentations to customers and various levels of management.
  • Familiarity with SNL drawing and authorization system, product development and qualification, testing and evaluation, modeling, and simulation.
  • Experience working with the NNSA, DOD customers, DOD contractors, LANL, KCNSC, and Pantex.

About Our Team:

Department 7222 has responsibility for the W76-1/-2 nuclear weapon stockpile and suite of activities. In addition to the established stockpile work there are a multitude of development and qualification projects currently ongoing. Production and surveillance activities in several areas continue at KCNSC and require frequent communication. Additionally, 7222 leads the development of testers and operational activities for hardware management and engineering leadership for all W76-1/-2 test body assembly and disassembly activities. Our department is also the interface with test and computational simulation organizations to manage technical and programmatic requirements associated with technical basis experiments.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD).
