Job Description

What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a Year-Round Undergraduate Intern to join our dynamic team. In this position you will learn and conduct experimental electrochemical materials science for energy storage R&D alongside accomplished scientists while using industry-leading equipment and facilities and gaining compelling experiences in preparation for a career in this exciting area.

On any given day, you may be called on to assist or conduct lab activities including:

  • Preparing battery electrodes and electrolyte solutions
  • Building and cycling both aqueous Zn-based and nonaqueous Li-based batteries
  • Synthesizing novel electrochemical materials for use in batteries
  • Assisting with characterization and analysis of electrochemical materials using microscopy and spectroscopy
  • Developing scientific communication skills by contributing to presentations and papers

Qualifications We Require:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program
  • Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • U.S. citizenship

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Hands-on chemical laboratory experience
  • Experience with glove box operations and/or battery materials
  • Experience with common techniques for materials analysis and/or electrochemistry, such as x-ray diffraction spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and others
  • General knowledge and good understanding of commonly used software, including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • The ability to work independently and self-sufficiently as part of a larger team with high reliability and attention to detail

The Nanoscale Sciences Department, Org. 1874, conducts collaborative leading-edge research that advances the understanding of materials at the nanoscale and enables the collaborative development of creative solutions for Sandia’s broad and evolving National Security and Energy Missions. Our research activities focus on the discovery, understanding, and exploitation of properties and structures unique to the micro- and nanoscale, broadly directed along three thrusts:

Security Clearance:
