Position Description:

The Disability Resources Specialist IV (Neurodivergent Specialist) will serve as a member of the Disability Resource Center (DRC) team and will be a resource for students, faculty, staff, and the DRC team.

The Neurodivergent Specialist provides advising and coaching for students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder with a priority for Speed School students.  The incumbent will support students as they identify academic, social, and career goals and develop skills in these domains. The person in this position will have significant interactions with students in face-to-face conversations.  Additionally, the person in this position will work with faculty and staff relative to the particular needs of a student and provide general training for faculty and staff to assist in identifying and implementing appropriate supports and communication systems.

The incumbent will engage in professional development relevant to Autism Spectrum Disorder to continuously improve the coaching for students and the training for faculty and staff.  The person in this position will visually observe student behavior in order to make recommendations regarding appropriate strategies for particular students. The incumbent must have the ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other various cultures or backgrounds.

The incumbent will serve as the convenor of a group comprised of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder.  The focus of this group will be to foster connections and belonging for this community of students. The incumbent will refer students to DRC staff as needed for consideration to recommend/provide accommodations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Provides advising and coaching for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder with a priority for Speed School students. 

• Supports students as they identify academic, social, and career goals and develop skills in these domains. This involves significant interactions with students in face-to-face conversations. 

• Enhances the abilities of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder by providing coaching, strategies, and techniques for successful classroom, program, and university navigation.

• Work with faculty and staff relative to the particular needs of an individual student.

• Provide general training for faculty and staff to assist in identifying and implementing appropriate supports and communication systems.

• Visually observe student behavior on in order to make recommendations regarding appropriate strategies for particular students.

• Ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.

• Refer students to DRC staff as needed for consideration to recommend/provide accommodations.

• Remain competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses.

• Engage in activities promoting use of the Disability Resource Center, such as tabling events, departmental presentations, trainings, transition programs, etc.

• Engage in cross-training that would prepare the incumbent to provide back up support the Disability Resource Center staff.

• Assist the DRC and other University units in attaining unit, Divisional, and University goals and objectives, as well as completing other duties as assigned.  

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience working at the college or university.

• Knowledge of government regulations that pertain to students including FERPA and ADA/Section 504.

• Demonstrated sensitivity to the concerns and needs of a diverse student and faculty population.

Compensation will be commensurate to candidate experience.
