Job Description

Summary

The research technician II will work with the team on a projects that involves structural variation and genomic rearrangements to study rare diseases.  This role must have excellent computer, written, and oral communication skills, and have knowledge of basic techniques used in human molecular biology & human genetics laboratory. The technician will be responsible for but not limited to the following: literature research, document experimental results, deliver lab meeting presentations and conduct cell culture studies under the direction of the supervisor. The technician be proactive and take initiative in all work related tasks.  It is critical that the technician possesses a team-centered and goal-oriented mindset and foster a team work environment.

Has willingness to learn new techniques, display initiative and the ability to work independently and as an integral part of the organizational team.

Job Duties

  • Extracts DNA from blood and tissue samples.
  • Conducts experiments that includes PCR and ddPCR with the DNA.
  • Sends reaction products to the sequencing core to analyze the DNA sequences as in segregation analysis.
  • Analyzes quantitative and categorical data. Finds genotype-phenotype relationships to help physicians in diagnosing patients.
  • Organizes data and makes figures to present in laboratory-wide and collaborator meetings and to put in publications.
  • Helps others in similar experiments and tasks to publish and present.
  • Works on research that involves the use of clinical specimens and human cell lines to identify novel genes and mechanisms of gene regulation, as well as biomarkers that can be translated to clinical practice.
  • Prepares of solutions and reagents for project execution.
  • Molecular biology and genetics methods.
  • Summarizes information in an appropriate format for a particular study.
  • Documents results, and keeps organized research notebook and confirm results.
  • Presents ongoing work in lab meetings.
  • Be able to present data acquired from experimental results and to describe project work.
  • Knowledge in software programs, that includes Microsoft Word, Power Point, Endnote, R and other programs
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Has familiarity with genomic analyses, gene cloning, human cell culture, ddPCR, or gene expression assays.
  • Experience in the area of developmental genetics.
  • Has excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Punctual, considerate, cost effective, organized, team player, be able to help advance the research goals and contribute to improving the lives of the families affected by these conditions.
