What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a R&D Undergraduate Cyber Security Summer Intern

The Securing Top Academic Research Talent at Historically Black Colleges & Universities (START HBCU) Institute is designed to increase research collaborations with HBCUs, and to develop a diverse talent pipeline in STEM. We are interested in attracting candidates from partnering universities and growing collaboration opportunities between HBCUs and Sandia. A key part of this is through offering summer internships to both undergraduate and graduate students to work at Sandia National Laboratories. The START HBCU Institute will hire interns into several critical mission areas.

As a Cyber Security Intern at Sandia, you will be guided by a technical mentor and work closely with a team of researchers and interns on issues of national significance.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Leverage your skills across numerous domains, including software/hardware development, data analysis and machine learning, reverse engineering, and machine and network virtualization.
  • Team with Sandia cybersecurity subject matter experts and fellow interns to solve real-world problems with real-world national security impact.

Opportunities exist at both our Livermore, CA and Albuquerque, NM laboratories’ site locations.

Students will be expected to work full time onsite for the duration of their internship.

Salary Range:

At Sandia, we value the important work done by our interns and its contribution to National Security. Because of this, our interns earn competitive pay rates. Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. Qualifications We Require:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in the spring term immediately preceding the internship (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited undergraduate program
  • Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • Ability to secure and maintatin a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship

Note: If you have not earned a HS diploma or equivalent, please apply to a high school intern position.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Attendance at a HBCU during the Spring term prior to the internship
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 out of 4.0 ofr all degree(s) earned/in progress
  • An existing U.S. Government granted security clearance
  • Demonstrated knowledge in core computer science concepts (e.g. data structures and algorithms, databases, operating systems, computer networks)
  • Demonstrated knowledge in critical advanced computer science and cybersecurity topics (e.g. malware reverse engineering, machine learning and data science, virtualization, software defined networks, mobile device security and protocols)

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
