About Our Team:

The departments of the California Stockpile Systems Engineering Group have the following responsibilities:

  • The W87-0 nuclear warhead, which is deployed on the U.S. Air Force (AF) Minuteman III Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM)
  • Integration of the W87-0 nuclear warhead with the USAF Sentinel Ballistic Missile
  • The B83 strategic nuclear bomb, with the B-2 bomber as its delivery aircraft
  • The W80-1 nuclear warhead, which is carried by the AF Air-Launched Cruise Missile (ALCM), with the B-52 bomber as its delivery aircraft
  • The Mk21 Fuze Systems Engineering is responsible for the design and production support of a replacement fuze for the Mk21 Reentry Vehicle, deployed on the Minuteman III ICBM. The responsibility also includes integrating the Mk21 Fuze Mod with the USAF Sentinel Ballistic Missile.

Along with the departments of the New Mexico Stockpile Systems Engineering Group, we have responsibilities for all the deployed nuclear weapon systems that provide our nation’s nuclear deterrence.

As part of our stewardship responsibility, we assess the systems each year to assure their continued ability to meet safety, security, and reliability requirements. Our findings create the technical basis for the annual assessment letter from the Sandia National Laboratories director to the U.S. government on the health of the nation’s nuclear stockpile.

Teams within our departments also undertake significant design, development, qualification, and production activities to ensure that the weapon systems continue to meet their design requirements, and develop new concepts to enhance system safety and security as requirements and the threat environment evolve.

Finally, when these weapon systems are no longer needed, our teams support dismantlement activities.

Our engineering departments work closely with the U.S. Air Force and Navy to support their operations, and collaborate with organizations across the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE). Internally, our teams collaborate with component and independent assessment teams, program offices, and science and technology organizations.
