About the Department
Environmental Health and Safety staff provides consultation and technical support, training and direction for regulatory compliance and effective program development to University faculty, staff, students and visitors. The Research Safety Section provides safety engineering services to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control health and safety related concerns that include the following: laboratory chemical hygiene, local exhaust ventilation, laboratory chemical safety, marketplace chemical review, accident investigation and reporting, compressed gas safety, laser safety, equipment design and construction standards, gas alarm systems, OSHA regulated chemicals program, safety plans, non-ionizing radiation, laboratory inspections, emergency response, process hazard reviews and more.
Essential Job Duties
The primary duties of this position are: to serve as the Assistant Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) for the University providing coverage and support for the Research Safety Group; to develop and refine research safety programs; to conduct EHS audits and inspections, chemical and physical hazard reviews, safety training; to update and improve EHS guidelines, programs, policies and procedures; and to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, recommendations for improvement of research/laboratory safety conditions.

These services will be conducted principally at the main campus of NC State University in Raleigh, NC, yet may include infrequent visits to NC State University property located throughout the state of North Carolina.

Primary responsibilities include:
Serves as Assistant Chemical Hygiene Officer for the University in support of the Research Safety Grpi
Conducts comprehensive, laboratory EHS inspections throughout the year
Manages the University-wide hazardous materials shipping program to ensure compliance with DOT/IATA
Manages the Controlled Substances program
Performs periodic reviews of hazardous material and equipment orders
Serves as EHS liaison to Facilities on laboratory ventilation selection and performance; including equipment such as fume hoods, snorkels, etc
Manages and direct activities of temporary EHS staff as needed
Serves on the EHS Spill Team (may require the use of an air-purifying respirator and other PPE)
Provides support and enhancements for lab safety tools including training, lab audits, hazard reviews and various industrial hygiene data bases
Serves as the Assistant Chemical Hygiene Officer for the University in support of the Research Safety Group, including developing procedures to:
Conducts lab inspections, hazard assessments, and responses to hazardous material events such as chemical spills and releases.
Reviews EHS policies addressing unique issues that are significant in scope in compliance with University, local, State, and Federal laws and regulations.
Manages the University Controlled Substances program. Develops audit program to identify, monitor, and support research groups using controlled substances. Ensures compliance with State and Federal regulations
Manages the University hazardous material shipping program, including IATA and DOT program review, update, and training. Addresses inquires regrading the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA)
Other Responsibilities
Responds to hazardous materials incidents and emergencies as needed to support the EHS emergency response team during and after-hours
Provides other services as assigned by the Laboratory Safety Manager
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, physical science, industrial hygiene, microbiology or related applied science; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Other Required Qualifications
Knowledge of EHS, State and Federal rules and regulations; knowledge of local policies and regulations.
Demonstrates an understanding of applicable policies and procedures, and maintains conditions that ensure a healthy and safe working environment.
Ability to interpret and communicate information to individuals and groups; deliver presentations suited to the characteristics and needs of the audience.
Ability to clearly, concisely, and effectively convey information orally or in writing to individuals and/or groups to ensure content and message are understood. Listens and responds appropriately to others.
Must have the ability to inspect/assess, monitor, investigate and/or recommend corrective action; conduct trends analysis; document compliance with standards; perform technical work, program design and implementation; hold accountability for outcomes of EHS issues.
Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodations.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in industrial hygiene.
Professional certification (Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Safety Professional) desirable
Experience in research environments is preferred.
Familiarization with OSHA, CDC and NIOSH guidelines is a plus.
