Position Description:

The Hite Institute of Art and Design at the University of Louisville seeks applicants for an Assistant Professor, tenure-track position in Painting to join our dynamic academic community, starting in Fall Semester 2025.
The Hite Institute of Art and Design seeks candidates who embrace contemporary, innovative practices, with a solid foundation in the traditions and history of painting. We seek candidates with expertise in technical processes of painting, as well as history of robust engagement with current theoretical and aesthetic debates within the field of painting. Candidates should demonstrate an affinity for teaching grounded in an approach that balances technical skill development with conceptual development fueled by experimentation and theory. Candidates should be prepared to teach courses within the present curriculum while also envisioning future directions for painting program within our expanding, interdisciplinary BFA and MFA programs. We seek candidates who will collaborate with faculty across the department with an eye toward contributing to the mission of the department as a whole. Starting rank of Assistant Professor with commensurate salary.
Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate painting, drawing and foundation classes, and advise and mentor BFA and MFA candidates. In addition to teaching 4-5 classes within an academic year (depending on graduate advising load), faculty are expected to maintain a record of professional, creative, and research activity. The successful candidate will supervise and maintain the painting studios, including off-campus graduate studios. They are expected to be a good colleague and civic-minded, as demonstrated by their participation in the governance and service duties of the department, college, and university.
Qualifications:

  • An MFA from an accredited institution with a focus on painting.

  • A robust painting practice with a history of exhibitions.

  • Proficiency in oil and acrylic technical (painterly) techniques/technologies, as well as contemporary theory.

  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary setting and to bring painterly techniques and histories to bear on contemporary social and formal questions across media.

  • At least three years teaching experience in a university setting is preferred.

The Hite Institute of Art and Design is an endowed department within the College of Arts and Sciences with a rich history dating back to 1937. It encompasses 20 full-time faculty members, a dedicated staff of four, and a diverse community of approximately 400 undergraduate and graduate students majoring in studio art, art history, graphic design, interior design, and critical & curatorial studies.
