What Your Job Will Be Like:
Our team is seeking a highly motivated Chief Non-Kinetic Effects (NKE) Program Engineer to define, lead, and guide technology discovery, maturation, and employment to our multi-domain portfolio across the Intelligence, Department of Defense, Special Operations, and industry communities. The Distinguished R&D Microwave & Sensor Engineer will be a national expert in digital signal processing, spectral analysis, operational system concepts and architectures, and artificial intelligence and machine learning applications. As the Chief NKE Program Engineer you will become the lead engineer over a multi-discipline, success oriented high-performance set of teams executing a plethora of projects across electronic attack, electronic support, and electronic protection initiatives. Projects range from urgent, quick-reaction requests in response to urgent real-world driven needs to longer term 3-5 year efforts. We develop end-to-end advanced communication systems for National Security applications and use a mix of cyber, computer science, RF design and engineering, mechanical design, and electrical engineering to develop solutions for our customers.
Your primary focus will be leading, defining, and garnering the development of novel radio frequency technologies across the laboratory and industry and then pairing them with ever evolving national level warfighter needs and gaps. This includes understanding, anticipating, and helping to define future needs at the national level and then using these needs to inform and drive research and technology maturation within and external to the laboratory. Such research could include novel digital signal process techniques, novel waveforms, use of artificial intelligence and machine learning, data analytics and/or reverse engineering of analog or digital signals and radio frequency protocols.
The position requires on-site work in a collaborative electronics laboratory environment and classified SCI environment at the Albuquerque site. The position requires occasional travel of 6-8 trips per year.
Salary Range:
$149,700 - $254,400
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
- Masters of Science in a relevant STEM discipline, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience
- 10 or more years of experience in one or more of the desired qualifications
- An Active DOE Q-level or DoD TS security clearance is required to start the position.
- The ability to obtain and hold an SCI-level clearance, which may require a polygraph test.
Qualifications We Desire:
Ideally, we would like to see your background include some of the following:
- A familiarity with DoD and IC organizations and associated systems and operations
- Experience in novel RF concept or system designs from ideation, development, test, deployment and operations
- Knowledge of Cyber Security practices and technologies
- Breadth of knowledge across and/or depth of knowledge in one of the following technology areas: RF front end and digital systems, embedded computer systems, software applications, and digital signal processing
- Proven experience in leading, guiding, and eliciting needs from national level customers and partners
- Knowledge of RF, Digital Communications, Electronic Warfare, and Cyber Security domain areas
- Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Application to the RF Digital Signal Processing
- Proven ability to understand and partner with and across a variety of industry partners
- An active DOE Q-level security clearance and an active SCI-level Clearance; or other equivalent active security clearance such as DOD Top Secret and SCI-level Clearance.
About Our Team:
The RF & Systems Electronics Center provides key electronics systems work to a wide variety of nuclear weapons, space, intelligence, and military programs across Sandia and the Nation. The Intelligence RF Communications group focuses on Electromagnetic Warfare applications across the Nation’s technology superiority strategies by delivering capabilities for Radio Frequency & spectral dominance, global highly reliable communications, and novel advancements for future strength. We are a highly dynamic set of departments that cross-team to provide integrated engineering systems solutions ranging from core research through prototype development and high-end, fielded products.
The Advanced Engagement Systems department develops multi-domain novel electromagnetic attack & defense concepts and systems with an eye on low size, weight, and power constrained applications. Our customers include a variety of government organizations including the U.S Armed Forces, the Intelligence Community, and Special Operations. Our staff members have a diverse skills base including microwave circuit design, antenna design, signal analysis, digital signal processing, embedded software, and system designs comprised of the latest associated hardware. We partner across the laboratory and the group to bring on other critical skill sets to our multi-disciplinary team to include computer scientists, systems engineers, and cyber engineers. Our design challenges include system development (designing scalable systems, systems integration into host platforms, etc), understanding complex adversary systems and associated vulnerabilities, and signal analysis and generation of RF low probably of detect waveforms.
Posting Duration:
This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.
Security Clearance:
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and SCI access, both of which require US citizenship. SCI access may also require a polygraph examination. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain these levels of access may be impacted.
Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by the DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
