What Your Job Will Be Like:
We are seeking an experimental physicist or engineer to pursue world-leading research in semiconductor quantum systems with applications in quantum information science. The candidate will join a team conducting research in spin qubits in silicon that leverages a wide range of skills and expertise. We are seeking candidates to develop and utilize their expertise in experimental science to advance this research. This may include quantum information processing, instrumentation science, semiconductor device physics, microwave electronics, software development, cryogenics, and related disciplines.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Operate, characterize, and analyze semiconductor-based quantum devices and qubits at dilution refrigerator temperatures.
- Interface with instrumentation to develop creative experimental techniques for implementing quantum circuits, and discovering physical phenomena relevant to semiconductor quantum dots and spin qubits.
- Work at the intersection of electronics, cryogenics, and semiconductor device science to design and execute complex experiments.
- Work in a diverse, collaborative team environment on large-scale projects as part of a fast-paced technically challenging research organization.
- Conduct original research in quantum information science while also supporting internal research teams and milestones.
- Communicate results to sponsors, collaborators, team members, and others in various venues.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range:
$109,300 - $217,400
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
- PhD in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or relevant field.
- Experience performing original research, demonstrated through a track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals or external presentations at scientific conferences.
- Experience conducting experimental research in a laboratory environment.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance and an SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph examination.
Qualifications We Desire:
- Experience working with quantum systems (especially semiconductor-based quantum dots), cryogenic systems, nanoscale electronic transport, or similar.
- Experience interfacing, controlling, and troubleshooting instrumentation and electronics for complex experiments
- Ability to work in a diverse, collaborative team environment
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to develop, deliver, and present technical ideas and results
- Ability to quickly learn and apply new experimental techniques
About Our Team:
The Advanced Silicon Quantum Devices Department of the Advanced Microsystems Group conducts groundbreaking research on semiconductor-based devices for quantum information sciences applications. Our fundamental expertise lies in semiconductor-based quantum dot and donor-based qubits. Our core capabilities are semiconductor qubit development and measurement, quantum coherent control, cryogenic characterization and measurement, and quantum information science and technology. We use our positive relationships within the Microsystems Engineering Sciences and Applications (MESA) foundry facility, the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT), and other internal and external organizations to develop advanced solid-state quantum device technologies.
Posting Duration:
This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.
Security Clearance:
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and SCI access, both of which require US citizenship. SCI access may also require a polygraph examination. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain these levels of access may be impacted.
Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by the DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
EEO:
All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.
NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
