What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a Year Round Technical Undergrad intern to join our dynamic team!

Sandia’s Dept. 5326 - Inertial Systems is looking for versatile student interns who have interest in learning about inertial systems and taking on assembly, testing, and drafting tasks. The selected candidates will be members of engineering development teams that deliver complex inertial systems that provide present and future capability for a variety of Sandia customers.

On any given day our interns could perform these type of activities:

  • Assembly and rework –
  • Assemble and disassemble prototype and flight systems
  • Cables and printed wiring assemblies
  • Drafting –
  • Use computer tools to draw/revise mechanical mounts, enclosures, interface diagrams
  • Testing –
  • Provide basic check-out on printed circuit boards and cables
  • Conduct various types – modules on bench or in environmental test facilities
  • Team efficiently with the organization’s engineers, technologists and business personnel

Salary Range:

Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. Qualifications We Require:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in a related accredited undergraduate program
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship

Note: If you have not earned a HS diploma or equivalent, please apply to a high school intern position.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience with mechanical assembly – hand tool usage, measurement, ability to fit check and assemble newly-fabricated hardware, suggest improvements as needed
  • Familiarity with computer-based mechanical drawing packages – AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CREO
  • Experience with MSOffice
  • Attention to detail and practices per handling of test equipment and critical test hardware
  • Savvy at using internet to source and procure parts and tools quickly
  • Ability to document to account for work activities
  • Favorable academic standing and progress towards a technical degree
  • Ability to accommodate tasks in and outside of normal work schedule
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Security Q-Clearance

Qualifications that are even more helpful to our team -

  • Self-motivated – ability to take a concept, flesh out a design in timely manner, and share ideas
  • Interact with precision manufacturing and measurements groups get parts vetted per drawings.
  • Basic electronics troubleshooting
  • Familiarity with lab test equipment – multi-meter, power supply
  • Experience with soldering cables and electronic parts
  • IPC certifications - IPC-A-610, J-STD 001, WHMA-A-620, IPC 7711/7721

Sandia’s Department 5326 - Inertial Systems develops and delivers innovative sensor and electronic subsystems for missiles, air-delivered and ground navigation applications. The work consists of evolving present design efforts, developing prototype and surrogate items, which are all tested and characterized in thermal, vibration, shock, various motion, electromagnetic and radiation environments. The organization specializes in engineering development for interface, test and evaluation of inertial sensors for integration into complex electronic and mechanical systems. Members of the organization have varying skills that include expertise in electronics engineering, software design, mechanical modeling and design, and electro/mechanical fabrication. Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
