Position Description:

The Exploratory & Transition Advising team seeks an Academic Advisor I/II who will provide holistic, individualized assistance to students in their major and career decision-making processes, specifically targeting students who are undecided, who are not yet admissible to their academic unit of choice, and those transitioning between majors. The position will be filled at the level as determined by education, experience, and qualifications of the candidate.

Exploratory & Transition Advising Academic Advisors are members of the Student Success Center team, which provides comprehensive support and programming to undergraduate students. In addition to Exploratory & Transition Advising, the SSC coordinates programming to help students successfully transition into UofL, offers student success coaching that proactively helps students navigate any roadblock they encounter on their path to graduation, and offers first-generation student services.

May require occasional travel between University buildings to meet with others. Normally works standard hours between 8am and 5pm with some weekend or evening hours on rare occasions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Meeting individually with students and applying various advising and coaching techniques to assist students in their academic, personal, and career development.

  • Assisting students through major exploration, degree planning, registration, and re-enrollment processes as well as navigating academic issues.

  • Monitoring student progress and providing proactive, sustained, and developmentally appropriate coaching to targeted populations.

  • Instructing, under supervision, the first-year orientation course.

  • Partnering with the Student Success Center team and campus partners (e.g. the University Career Center and academic units) in offering programs and services designed to improve student persistence.

  • Utilizing advising and student records software to maintain accurate and detailed advising notes, track students, and schedule advising appointments.

  • Participating in professional development opportunities and integrating new or improved knowledge into advising practice.

  • Promoting student success for all within UofL’s diverse student population by providing student-centered, highly engaged student contact while working collaboratively with colleagues across campus.

Preferred Competencies:

  • Ability to build rapport and sustain relationships with students.

  • Experience and comfort working with diverse student populations, including but not limited to first generation students, low-income students, adult learners, and underrepresented students.

  • High level of interpersonal communication, problem solving, time management and organizational skills.

  • Familiarity with technology related to word processing and student information systems.

  • Ability to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.

  • Knowledge of and ability to apply student development theory.

  • Experience working in a fast-paced, high student contact environment.

Target Compensation Maximum:

$54,300.00

Target Compensation Minimum:

$36,200.00

Compensation will be commensurate to candidate experience.
