Researching Heart Attack, Heart Failure, Stroke, Hypertension, Diabetes... With the increasing frequency of obesity and diabetes, especially in Georgia, cardiovascular disease is reaching epidemic proportions. The Vascular Biology Center at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University knows the demand is high for new and better treatments. Our internationally recognized team of research experts have one goal - to make breakthroughs in the prevention and treatment of disease so that we all may live longer, healthier lives.
Job Summary
This position requires the ability to maintain mouse colony by crossing tissue specific mice with various floxed mice to make tissue-specific knockout mice. Successful candidate will perform genotyping assays to distinguish each of the mouse lines, set up breeder cages to maintain lines or generate unique combinations of lines for experiments, perform tamoxifen injections to induce the loss or gain of a gene's function in the mouse. A database, already in place, will need daily updating. Candidate must be able to handle and work with mice and have organizational skills with ability to multitask. The candidate will also work with members of a team of scientists, each of whom carries out a series of mouse experiments of human relevance. In addition, the candidate will perform plasmid amplification, tissue cutting and histological and immunofluorescence staining to assist lab member's work.
Responsibilities
The duties include, but are not limited to:
Maintain mouse colony through selective breeding and culling.
Wean and genetically identify offspring through strain-specific genotyping assays.
Plasmid amplification.
Tissue cutting and immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence analysis.
Analyze gels and update database.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned.
OR
Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and a minimum of two years' experience in a research or basic science or other comparable area.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with histological analysis and handling mice.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.
SKILLS
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Goal-focused and energetic self-starter. Detail-oriented with strong organizational, multi-tasking, problem solving and prioritization skills.
ABILITIES
Ability to maintain confidentiality. Willingness and ability to work with research animals. Ability to complete work, meet deadlines and work independently with only general supervision.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required).
Salary Minimum: $17.88 hourly.
Pay Band: B5
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.
