Job Summary:The Development Specialist is responsible for developing, executing, and reviewing the Badger Challenge community engagement, growth strategies and goals to increase participation and fundraising. The Badger Challenge is a community cancer fundraising event that gives 100% of all dollars raised to cancer research at UW-Madison and UW Carbone Cancer Center. This position is a vital part of the Badger Challenge team and increasing our presence in Madison and Wisconsin to become Wisconsin's largest cancer fundraiser. This position will also engage in fundraising activities in the Department of Human Oncology.
Principal duties:
- Increase and support sustained engagement of the Badger Challenge participants, teams and volunteers through ongoing outreach, facilitation, and follow-through.
- Create and execute annual engagement strategy and campaign to increase awareness, participation, and fundraising.
- Achieve monthly, quarterly, and annual growth goals and targets set by the Badger Challenge Director.
- Work closely with the Director of Marketing to identify assets to help engage and grow Badger Challenge participation and fundraising.
- Lead, plan, manage and review the activities and operations related to community engagement and growth.
- Identify, establish, and sustain collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Assist The Director of Volunteers in identifying and securing individuals and groups to serve as event-day volunteers.
- Identify and recruit individual and community fundraisers that can help crowd source Badger Challenge fundraising efforts.
- Meet with former and current patients and families to increase awareness, participation and fundraising efforts for the Badger Challenge and our mission.
- Engage in fundraising activities with the Dept of Human Oncology as requested.
Responsibilities:
Assists in the planning, promotion and execution of development events, leads the creation and updating of informational materials, interacts with stakeholder groups to cultivate and maintain relationships, and leads reporting efforts on the effectiveness of development activities of the unit.
10% Assists with the development of strategic planning initiatives and objectives, program budgets, and monitors activity to ensure adherence to established guidelines
10% Collects, prepares, and analyzes donor information and event data and provides subsequent recommendations for improvement and enhancement
10% Schedules logistics and secures resources for event and program activities, facilities, participants, and vendors adhering to established timelines and expectations
60% Assists with the design, development, and delivery of marketing and communication materials and other event publications to promote development events and programs
10% Serves as a point of contact for internal and external stakeholders at meetings and activities to advocate for and promote the interests of the unit

Education:
Preferred
Bachelor's Degree
Preferred focus in Non-Profit Management, communications, Business Administration or related fields.
Qualifications:
Required Experience:
- 2+ years in community engagement, non-profit management, or donor relations.
Preferred Experience:
- Prior experience in grass roots fundraising.
Core Competencies:
- Comfortable speaking to internal and external audiences.
- Knowledge of current engagement and fundraising trends and practices.
- Demonstrated experience creating tools to communicate process, strategy, and status.
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with various stakeholders.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team while also self-directing and managing individual tasks and projects.
- Agile in decision making.
