The Electromagnetic Theory & Simulation Department is seeking a candidate with a background in electromagnetic theory, computational physics, and/or computer science for the development and application of electromagnetic computational simulation software.

Key functions of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Simulate electromagnetic environments and their effect on complex systems.
  • Boundary element method (integral equation method-of-moments) and finite-element techniques. Development of this software will include algorithmic enhancements to enable the electromagnetic simulation of complex systems, improve the usability of the code for electromagnetic analysts, and provide alternate solution methods for generalized capability to address a wide array of electromagnetic problems.
  • You will assist in identifying, developing, and implementing advanced computational solution methods. In addition, these software tools will be implemented with next generation high-performance computing platforms in mind. These platforms will use a MPI+X environment, a hybrid parallel distributed and threaded processing paradigm. In the near term, the threaded processing platforms include nVidia GPUs. As part of a software team you are expected to work well in an environment that uses agile methods of software engineering.

The selected applicant can be a remote worker located in any U.S. State or District of Columbia. Regular or periodic travel to your assigned work location may be required.

Salary Range:

$104,100 - $207,100

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Ph.D. degree in mathematics, computer science, electrical engineering, physics or closely related field, with a specialization in computational simulation or computational electromagnetics

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience in C++, object-oriented programming, and a collaborative development environment
  • Experience developing and/or working with full-wave (Integral-Equation Method of Moments) software
  • Publications or presentations demonstrating experience with developing numerical simulations or first-principles models for complex physical processes
  • Strong mathematical and analysis background with good knowledge of electromagnetic theory, analysis, modeling, and simulation.
  • Knowledge of parallel programming, threading, distributed memory, and/or SIMD
  • Experience with High Performance Computing architectures and execution
  • Experience with parallel programming extensions such as MPI, OpenMP, or Cuda
  • Ability to collaborate with others and contribute to a team effort
  • Outstanding communication skills and flexible in job assignments
  • Passionate about developing expertise in different areas of electromagnetics

About Our Team:

Department 1324 is a multidisciplinary research group that develops theory and simulation codes to support the Department of Energy's NNSA Defense Programs. The primary areas of research include analytic theory and modeling in linear and non-linear electromagnetics, plasma physics and high voltage breakdown. Our capabilities are used to advance our understanding of electromagnetic and plasma effects on components and systems in support of the NNSA's stockpile stewardship program. This includes the development of performance portable parallel electromagnetic codes as well as coupled Monte-Carlo/particle-in-cell plasma radiation codes under the DOE Advanced Scientific Computing program. This team is part of the Radiation, Electrical and High Energy Density Science (REHEDS) Research Foundation at Sandia.

Posting Duration:

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a clearance, a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia who require uncleared access for greater than 179 days during their employment, are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. Access includes physical and/or cyber (logical) access, as well as remote access to any NNSA information technology (IT) systems. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of for Federal Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.
