What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a highly motivated experienced R&D Mechanical Engineer to become part of the Stockpile Logistics Team. You will be part of a growing team that plays a critical role in the United States Nuclear Security Enterprise and Sandia National Laboratories.

To support this critical mission, we are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support design, development, qualification, production and technical basis opportunities. This requires a multi-disciplinary approach of systems engineering supported science, critical thinking, and partnership with several internal and external entities. This position includes interfacing with multiple internal organizations, as well as U.S. Navy, and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) customers to ensure a successful integration of Department of Energy (DOE) systems into service.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Lead interdisciplinary teams in solving high-profile technical challenges.
  • Lead test planning activities, coordinate with test facilities, and execute complex system level environmental and functional tests.
  • Create, interpret, and update mechanical designs, environmental specifications, and system level documentation using the Sandia ND drawing and authorization system.
  • Analyze test data and system performance against design requirements.
  • Draft and release technical documents, including test reports, engineering authorizations, decision papers, etc.
  • Direct detailed study toward a greater knowledge and understanding of the technical basis of the system and related hardware.
  • Experience using engineering principles to conduct trade studies to identify system solutions.
  • Interface with the National Nuclear Security Administration, the Department of Defense, Los Alamos National Laboratory, DoD contractors, the Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), and Pantex on various topics including design, testing approaches, requirements, and test facility planning.
  • Some travel to locations including, but not limited to Livermore CA, Los Alamos, NM, Amarillo, TX, Washington, DC and Kansas City, MO is required for this position.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant will be required to work onsite full-time in Albuquerque, NM. Some travel is required for this position.

Salary Range:

$109,300 - $217,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Master’s degree in Engineering or a relevant STEM field, plus one (1) year of experience; OR Bachelor’s degree in stated field, plus five (5) years of experience.
  • Active DOE Q clearance (or DOD Top Secret clearance), with ability to participate, as requested, in random polygraph testing.

About Our Team:

Our mission is to Realize the W76-1/-2 ALT 939 and W88 ALT 940 Integrated Surety Architecture (ISA) Scope. Responsibilities include all aspects of systems engineering, encompassing planning and execution of all qualification activities including testing, modeling & simulation and analysis to ensure the weapon systems remain safe, secure, and reliable as they are entered into service. The team provides the systems engineering expertise and support for the ALT 939 and ALT 940 and is the direct interface to the customer and partner sites as the System Integrator. The department manages collaborative activities and interfacing with Over-the-Road (OTR) organizations to accomplish transportation integration activities. We also partner with technical organizations across Sandia National Laboratories, including other system groups, stockpile surveillance, materials research, science and engineering, and computational modeling and simulation, to execute our mission. In addition, we partner with external stakeholders, including the National Nuclear Security Administration, Department of Defense and its contractors, Los Alamos National Laboratory, as well as the Kansas City National Security Campus and Pantex Production plants, to ensure the continued success of the programs.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
