What Your Job Will Be Like:

Organization 05497, Directed Energy Missions, is actively seeking a motivated and talented R&D Undergraduate Summer Intern to join our dynamic team! As the selected candidate, you will be part of a team dedicated to advancing state-of-the-art High-Power Microwave (HPM) sources and compact pulsed power technology which enables the next generation of Directed Energy systems; both airborne and ground based. Opportunities in this role may include gaining experience with electromagnetic simulation, circuit design, solid state devices, high voltage switches, learning about technologies to increase energy density of capacitors, developing novel methods to mitigate high voltage breakdown, working with cutting edge pulsed power systems, and contributing to prototype HPM source designs.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Assist staff and technologists with designing pulsed power systems and/or HPM sources
  • Experimental setup and test execution
  • Collect and analyze experimental data
  • Communicate test results to team members
  • Participate in lab improvement activities

Salary Range:

At Sandia, we value the important work done by our interns and its contribution to National Security. Because of this, our interns earn competitive pay rates. Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. Qualifications We Require:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in the spring term immediately preceding the internship (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited undergraduate program
  • Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • Ability to secure and maintatin a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship

Note: If you have not earned a HS diploma or equivalent, please apply to a high school intern position.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Enrolled full time in an accredited physics or electrical engineering program
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0
  • Completed at least two years of undergraduate education
  • Completed courses in electronic circuits, electromagnetics, statics, and waves
  • Experience working in a laboratory environment on RF/plasma related experiments
  • Experience with analyzing data and drawing conclusions
  • Experience with various software programming languages (Python, C, Java, etc.)
  • Experience with various engineering software (MATLAB, ANSYS, SolidWorks, Excel, etc.)
  • Experience working with high voltage components

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
