The Medical College of Georgia Department of Cellular Biology and Anatomy is dedicated to understanding cellular function through state-of-the art research in areas such as autophagy and apoptosis, bone metabolism, developmental biology, molecular motors, dysphagia/swallowing disorders, exosome biology, renal disease, stem cell research, vision science (retina and cornea), and cell wounding. Our department is dedicated to understanding cellular function through state-of-the art research in areas such as autophagy and apoptosis, bone metabolism, developmental biology, molecular motors, dysphagia/swallowing disorders, exosome biology, renal disease, stem cell research, vision science (retina and cornea), and cell wounding. The Department of Cellular Biology and Anatomy has as its core mission the advancement of outstanding research and education. We work collaboratively to discover new knowledge through innovative biomedical research, to transmit that knowledge to students, and to train future researchers, educators, and health care professionals.
Job Summary
The Senior Research Associate will play a critical role in our research team, contributing to experimental design, data analysis, and manuscript preparation. The position involves advanced bench work, particularly in animal models, and requires a candidate with substantial prior research experience, as demonstrated by multiple publications.
Responsibilities
The duties include, but are not limited to:
ANIMAL MODEL STUDIES
Conduct bench studies utilizing various experimental animal models, including:
- Global Cerebral Ischemia in male and female rats and mice.
- Neonatal Hypoxia-Ischemia models in rats and mice.
- Thrombotic Ischemia/Stroke models in rats and mice.
- Traumatic Brain Injury models.
- Transgenic Alzheimer's disease models in rats and mice.
- Perform drug administration via intraperitoneal (IP) and intravenous (IV) injections.
- Apply Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) as part of treatment protocols.
BRAIN TISSUE ANALYSIS AND IMAGING
Perform brain tissue histological staining, including TUNEL and cresyl violet staining.
Conduct immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence staining on brain sections.
Evaluate hippocampal damage and assess brain infarct volume.
Perform confocal microscopy and analyze brain tissue homogenates through Western
blotting and immunoprecipitation.
Quantify ATP production levels and measure mitochondrial activity.
Conduct biochemistry kinase activity analysis, Duolink II proximity ligation assays, and
electron microscopic analysis.
FUNCTIONAL BEHAVIORAL EVALUATIONS
Administer and analyze behavioral tests, including Elevated Plus Maze, Open Field, Morris
Water Maze, and Barnes Maze tests.
Perform Cylinder and Adhesive tests and analyze startle response data in mice and rats.
Interpret behavioral data and collaborate with the Principal Investigator on research plans
related to learning and memory.
ANIMAL HUSBANDRY
Manage transgenic and gene knockout mouse colonies, including breeding setup and PCR
genotyping.
Maintain multiple transgenic mouse colonies with precise record-keeping.
RENAL SURGICAL PROCEDURES
Perform renal ischemia-reperfusion surgery, 5/6 nephrectomy surgery, and UUO surgery.
Induce diabetic mouse models for research purposes, including diabetic chronic kidney
disease.
OTHER
Perform all other related duties as assigned or requested.
Required Qualifications
Master's degree in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and two years of experience in research, basic science or clinical laboratory, particularly clinical trial research.
OR
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned with a minimum of five years' research and/or clinical experience; previous supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Extensive experience in performing complex animal model studies.
Proven expertise in advanced tissue staining, imaging, and biochemical analyses.
Documented research experience with a strong publication record.
Experience in animal husbandry, particularly with transgenic and gene knockout models.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Knowledge of laboratory procedures and protocols. Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases. Knowledge of AU and MCG policies and procedures that govern grant expenditures and grant submissions. Proficiency in behavioral testing and interpretation of results.
SKILLS
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Detail-oriented with strong multi-tasking, prioritization and organizational skills. Strong collaborative skills.
ABILITIES
Willingness and ability to work with research animals. Ability to maintain confidentiality, complete work and meet deadlines. Ability to manage and schedule resources and manage project expenses, reagents, equipment and other supplies. Ability to work independently.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required).
Salary Range: $48,800-$56,000 annually.
Pay Band: B9
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.
