We are seeking a highly motivated experienced R&D Systems Engineer or Scientist to oversee a portfolio of high-visibility, fast-paced engineering and science projects assessing the safety, reliability, and performance of the stockpile systems. The primary task is the development and execution of technical studies to support Annual Stockpile Assessment, in coordination with the Stockpile Systems Leads, Sandia Science and Technology (S&T) community stakeholders, and Principal Investigators and their teams who execute the technical investigations. Other responsibilities include managing multiple projects and multi-source budgets, leading key technical meetings, reviewing advanced scientific and engineering project reports and providing feedback, advising management, creating quarterly status and annual technical summary reports, and presenting plans and technical project results. You will collaborate closely with customers, stakeholders, partners, users, and domain experts throughout the Nuclear Security Enterprise. We make use of System Engineering tools, methodologies, and processes in support of this assignment.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Lead the Technical Basis Realization Team (TBRT), direct and manage several in-common (cross-cutting) stockpile system technical basis projects across multiple Stockpile Systems.
- Lead and engage with the multi-System TBRT Council to resolve technical basis issues for Stockpile Systems.
- Combine systems engineering principles and multiple engineering disciplines to improve understanding of technical basis.
- Create summary reports and brief management on the scientific and engineering project outcomes during Stockpile Annual Assessment.
- Analyze compiled risks, issues, and needs (concerns) information from all the Stockpile Systems to recommend in-common technical basis projects to reduce those concerns.
- Communicate Stockpile Systems' priority cross-cutting needs to the S&T Community to foster beneficial collaborative partnerships.
- Manage work package agreements, project schedules, and budgets.
- Apply analysis and problem-solving techniques to stockpile evaluation activities.
- Collaborate regularly with the Production Agency and Physics Laboratories.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant will be required to work onsite in Albuquerque, NM. Some travel may be required for this position.
Salary Range:
$109,300 - $217,400
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

- Demonstrated ability to work on challenging engineering problems in a fast-paced collaborative team environment that requires extensive cross-organizational and multi-disciplinary teaming.
- Experience with SNL NW Product Realization Process, NNSA, and Department of Defense (DOD) NW processes.
- Experience in interacting with Production Agencies and working production issues.
- Experience and knowledge in Systems Engineering.
- Demonstrated knowledge of complex electrical, electro-mechanical, nuclear, and/or mechanical systems.
- Able to manage multiple high visibility projects simultaneously.
- Experience directing use of physical and/or computational simulations/modeling.
- Experience interacting with internal/external customers (i.e., 1800 and component PRTs) and stakeholders.
- Excellent communication skills, oral and written-clear, concise, and effective.
- Demonstrated teaming skills.

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.
Security Clearance:
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
