Job Description
The Chemical and Fuel Cycle Technologies division is seeking a Section Manager for the newly formed Materials Engineering group. The group leader reports to the Pyroprocess & Materials Development Department Manager. The person in this position will provide technical leadership and oversight for on-going and proposed R&D activities related to materials development and applications, including glass, ceramic, and metallic nuclear waste form and containment materials, and administrative management of staff, laboratory facilities and equipment, including a scanning electron microscope facility. They will maintain sponsor satisfaction by providing comprehensive technical reports and presentations of high quality that meet research objectives and schedules, pursue new research opportunities based on technically sound and focused proposals, and serve as a technical point of contact to provide information on matters related to applied materials technologies.
In this position, the successful candidate will:
Provide technical leadership and manage the staff, facilities and research projects within the Materials Engineering Group, including assignments and oversight of work scope and objectives, deliverables, schedule, and budget; foster programmatic growth; resolve technical problems; develop staff through assessments and mentoring; evaluate job performance.
Oversee and contribute to the design of sound project plans based on relevant theoretical concepts and ensure safe, effective, and timely completion of experiments and deliverables within budget constraints through judicious utilization of support personnel and facilities.
Manage and conduct research projects and develop strategies to advance understanding, modeling, and applications to materials-related technologies and performance assessments in nuclear and non-nuclear sectors.
Prepare and review technical documents that meet research and quality objectives and publish technical articles in referred journals.
Develop and apply methods for generating high-quality data and models.
Identify R&D needs for which the division has applicable expertise and facilities to create programmatic growth; establish teams to develop new ideas and concepts to meet these needs; coordinate and submit high-quality research proposals to potential clients.
Establish and maintain technical liaisons and working relationships with personnel at universities, industrial laboratories, and government laboratories.
Position Requirements
To perform the essential functions of this position successful applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, which is required to comply with federal regulations and contract.
Demonstrated knowledge of national programs in which advanced material engineering and related capabilities can be applied, including awareness of organization goals, budgets, technical and political developments.
Demonstrated skill identifying appropriate funding sources as well as developing and implementing new program activities within the Department.
Technical skill in analyzing, interpreting, and presenting results from own work and results generated by others.
Demonstrated skill in microscopy and analytical technologies.
Established skill safely working with high temperature devices in glovebox environments.
Skill in safely working with radioactive materials.
Demonstrated skill in oral and written communication of technical results and interpretations.
Demonstrated skills in mentoring and developing technical staff.
Demonstrated skill in working with Laboratory, Sponsor, and federal management.

This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in chemical engineering or a related field at the Ph.D. degree level with four years of experience or equivalent in the scientific application of this knowledge and practical laboratory experience.
