The University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry seeks an Assistant Professor in the Department of Diagnostic and Preventive Sciences, Division of Periodontics responsible for didactic and clinical teaching for pre-doctoral and post-doctoral students. Under the supervision of the Division Head of Periodontics and working directly with Periodontics clinic coordinators, the Assistant Professor will be responsible for the periodontal instruction in the periodontal process of care, including clinical skills and evaluation of clinical procedures. In addition to clinical responsibilities, the other associated functions in the baccalaureate/graduate periodontics program include student advisement and mentoring, committee assignments, service activities, and professional development. In addition to these responsibilities, the Assistant Professor will perform as a role model for students and public relations with patients.
The successful candidate will join a periodontics department committed to excellence in teaching didactic and clinical courses in the baccalaureate and graduate periodontics program. Responsibilities include:
- Fulfill department and College Responsibilities as directed by the Division Head and/or Dean and abide by College and department policies and philosophies.
- Ensure that instruction meets or exceeds standards established by the ADA Commission on Dental Accreditation.
- Uphold expected standards of professionalism, quality, and ethics and in so doing serve as a role model for students
- Remain in clinic for the duration of all clinical sessions.
- Employs a variety of teaching methods to meet the varied learning styles of students.
- Supervise all care/treatment plans developed by students and approved by clinic faculty.
- Supervise and grade all clinical duties performed by students.
- Administer and grade clinical skills in accordance with course objectives identified in the course syllabus.
- Monitor student performance on a periodic basis and provide feedback to students in a reasonable amount of time.
- Follow the periodontic student clinic documents, policies and procedures, and work in partnership with faculty and program director to update as needed.
- Provide consultation on medical histories of new and recall patients.
- Supervise students during the administration of local anesthesia and monitoring of nitrous oxide for clinic patients.
- Work amongst/as a periodontic supervising dentist(s) to authorize radiographs to meet patient's needs.
- Evaluate dental radiographs to determine if additional radiographs are necessary.
- Respond to emergency situations and implement emergency procedures.
- When assuming didactic role, prepares and updates all course materials to be presented to all sites during the academic term.
- Share information about students' needs, attendance, and achievement with the director and other faculty members.
- Assume responsibility for own continuing education by participation in workshops, seminars, regional and/or national meetings.
- Attend regularly scheduled department/faculty calibration meetings.
- Participate in trainings, orientations, and college-required activities.
- Assist in the Division of Periodontics' accreditation process.
- Perform other duties delegated by the Division Head of Periodontics
- Supervise student organizations and volunteer activities.
- Support the College and Periodontic Division mission and initiatives.
- Applicants must possess a dental degree (DDS, DMD, or equivalent) and a certificate of advanced training in Periodontics at an ADA Accredited institution.
- Educationally qualified in Periodontics by CODA - US Periodontal program and eligible to take the American Board of Periodontology examination.
- Licensed to practice Periodontics in the State of Oklahoma or be eligible for licensure.
- Must be, or be able to become, IV Sedation licensed in the State of Oklahoma.
- Knowledgeable of current technologies in clinic as appropriate to the area of instruction.
- Possess knowledge of, and demonstrates proficiency in, current concepts in periodontics, periodontic education, clinical instruction, general dentistry, and clinical practice.
