Job Description

Summary

The Eye Bank Technician I is an integral position to the Lions Eye Bank. The position works to procure tissue from the locale hospitals, morgues and funeral homes. The tissue is used in transplant surgery and/or research. The position evaluates corneal tissues and donor information to determine whether the tissue is suitable for donation.

This position is per diem, but candidates should have at least 15 hours per week of availability.

Job Duties

  • Recovers eye tissue from tissue donors for transplant or research purposes.
  • Performs and documents donor physical and ocular assessment.
  • Obtains blood specimens for serologic testing.
  • Performs internal processing of tissue on an as needed bases.
  • Requests and obtains medical records of donors.
  • Reviews potential donor medical and social history to determine whether the tissue is suitable for donation.
  • Delivers eye tissue to surgeons for transplant or research.
  • Answers and screens referral calls for eye donors.
  • May contact families of qualified potential donors and obtains consent to donate eye tissue.
  • Enters referral data into database.
  • Maintains clean and safe laboratory environment.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • College degree either AA, BS or BA.
  • COA, COT or COMT through JCAHPO
  • 2 years working as an ophthalmic assistant or ophthalmic technician within an ophthalmology practice.
  • Experience in a tissue bank, funeral home or working with next of kin.
