Master's degree in a related field and four (4) years of related experience. Additional experience may be used on a one-to-one basis to offset the educational requirements. Grade 7 (Salaried)Position Description:
The Jasmer Lab, a recently opened laboratory in the Oral Immunology & Infectious Diseases department, is looking for a Lab Researcher to assist in experiments involving biochemical, molecular, and cellular techniques as well as translational approaches involving pre-clinical animal models, histological analyses, and bioinformatics to study signaling processes in inflammatory diseases that affect the salivary glands. Our work currently focuses on autoimmune Sjögren’s Disease and radiation-induced salivary gland damage that arises following curative head and neck radiotherapy. We study receptor signaling and downstream cellular processes that result from receptor binding of lysophospholipids and/or nucleotides. This position will also entail lab management and personnel training duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Mammalian Cell Culture: Perform cell culture techniques, including generating new cell lines through transfection or infection.
Biochemical and Molecular Assays: Conduct experiments such as Western blot, qRT-PCR, and ELISA.
Live-Cell Functional Assays: Perform assays such as calcium flux assays to assess receptor function.
Flow Cytometry: Digest tissues per lab protocols to generate single-cell suspensions. Perform or assist in performing flow cytometry studies, including staining and data collection.
Lab Inventory Management: Coordinate, collect, organize, and replenish lab materials. Manage laboratory sample documentation and storage.
Histology: Perform tissue collection, storage, sectioning, and staining for histological studies.
Personnel Training: Assist in supervising and training new lab members as needed.
Laboratory Equipment Maintenance: Upkeep of laboratory equipment.
Animal Handling: Handle laboratory mice for experiments.
Data Management: Organize, analyze, and summarize large experimental datasets.
Experiment Documentation: Maintain detailed and accurate digital laboratory notebooks, including information on reagents and protocols used.
Protocol Development: Establish and document standard experimental and analytical procedures for the lab.
Literature Review and Writing: Stay current with scientific literature and assist in preparing manuscripts for journal submission. Prepare some figures and figure legends for grant applications.
Data Presentation: Present data during research group meetings and/or one-on-one meetings. Optional, but encouraged—present research findings at local and national conferences.
Adhere to Biosafety Protocols
Occasional Lab Chores: autoclaving consumables, making buffers, refilling supplies, washing dishes.
Preferred Qualifications
Molecular Biology and Biochemistry: Proficiency in techniques such as Western blot, qRT-PCR, ELISA, and cloning.
Data Analysis: Experience in processing and analyzing datasets, with comfort in basic statistical analyses. Familiarity with bioinformatics, including R or Python, is a plus.
Microscopy: Skilled in working with inverted and confocal microscopes.
Mammalian Cell Culture: Hands-on experience in culturing mammalian cells.
Histology: Proficient in histological techniques; experience with salivary gland histology is a bonus.
Flow Cytometry: Familiarity with flow cytometry techniques.
Animal Handling: Comfortable handling rodents for experimental procedures.
Scientific Communication: Experience preparing figures and writing text for manuscripts and grant applications.
Competencies
