Job Description

Under general supervision, perform skilled mechanical maintenance and service duties on automobiles and other related vehicles and equipment and/or grounds and construction equipment, complying with EPA, OSHA, and all appropriate regulations and codes following proper procedures and techniques.

Ball State University welcomes applications for a 2nd shift Automotive/Diesel Mechanic position.

Job Function:

Under general supervision, perform skilled mechanical maintenance and service duties on automobiles and other related vehicles and equipment and/or grounds and construction equipment, complying with EPA, OSHA, and all appropriate regulations and codes following proper procedures and techniques.

Minimum Education:

1.High School diploma or equivalent (GED).

Preferred Education:

Completion of a post-secondary program in automobile technology, medium and heavy-duty diesel truck technology or heavy equipment repair.

Minimum Experience:

1.Successful completion of an Automotive Mechanic apprenticeship program as approved by the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training, or an equivalent combination or education and experience from which comparable job knowledge can be acquired as determined by Ball State University.
2.Two (2) years or more full-time experience working as a mechanic in a professional garage.
3.No allergies to soaps, cleaning agents, chemicals, or environmental factors.
4.Must be able to read and comprehend OSHA and hazardous materials info.
5.Must be able to handle multiple tasks at once, provide friendly and prompt customer service, and work independently.
6.Must be able to read and comprehend all specified policies and procedures for safety, hazardous materials information, and University policies, procedures, and communications, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
7.Must posses and maintain a valid Driver’s License and be insurable under the university’s auto fleet policy. Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial driver’s license (CDL), or obtain such licensing within a reasonable time period after hire as determined by Ball State University if the position requires the employee to hold a valid CDL.
8.Must pass post-offer/pre-employment mandatory drug and alcohol test.
9.Must be able to perform all mental and physical requirements as outlined in each job duty.
10.You must be 18 years or older.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Repair automobiles, buses, trucks, landscape and agricultural equipment, stationary generators, and related equipment. Inspect, diagnose and repair gasoline and diesel engines used throughout the university system. Disassemble, repair, and/or overhaul engines, transmissions, differentials and all subcomponents. Demonstrate the ability to rebuild component parts and assemblies using accepted practices and special tools. Must be able to safely use acetylene and electric welders to facilitate repairs or modifications. Must be able to test drive all University vehicles. Must be able to learn and demonstrate mastery of CFAWin and Shop Floor software record keeping systems.
  • Troubleshoot ignition, electrical systems, fuel delivery and computer controlled operational systems. Repair and service air conditioning, heating, and engine-cooling systems. Utilize test equipment and wiring charts to diagnose and repair complex automotive, truck, and bus wiring. Must be able to understand loading and flow of electricity to diagnose and repair those items that do not have wiring charts or manuals. Must be computer literate to utilize software programs to diagnose and repair electrical, emission and electronic controls on automobiles, trucks, and buses.
  • Make wheel alignments and repair of braking systems in light, medium, and heavy-duty configurations. Must be able to use common alignment machines and techniques to repair or restore proper alignment to cars, trucks, and buses. Perform 2- and 4-wheel alignments. Repair vehicle braking systems along with associated components to include hydraulic brakes and air brakes.

  • Install and repair accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wipers. Must be able to follow included component instructions to install radios, heater, mirrors, windshield wipers, etc. In the absence of detailed or written instructions, must be able to complete accessory installation or repair using safe, sound, and accepted mechanical practices. May be required to modify existing or fabricate new wiring harnesses or hose bundles.
  • Perform routine and scheduled maintenance services including oil changes, lubrication, and tune-ups. Follow checklists to ensure odometer and/or hour meter records are updated, maintenance reminders rest, all important parts are examined, including fluid levels, belts, hoses, tire condition, steering systems, braking systems, and alter potentially troublesome areas.
  • Perform paint and body repairs. Repair damaged automobile, truck, and bus bodies. Assess damage sequence and return damaged panel to original state. Reform, cut, reseam and restore sheet metal to paintable status. Repaint repaired area and blend paint to make repairs practically indiscernible within acceptable professional standards. Complete estimates of damage on a varied pool of equipment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and be insurable under the university's auto fleet policy. Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger Transport Endorsement or obtain such licensing within a reasonable time period after hire as determined by Ball State University.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
