Job Description

Postdoctoral Scientist - Donczew Lab

Department: Cell Cycle & Cancer Biology
Location: Oklahoma City, OK
Position Overview and Responsibilities
The Donczew Lab in the Cell Cycle and Cancer Biology Research Program, is seeking a Postdoctoral Scientist to investigate the mechanisms of transcription and DNA replication, as well as the crosstalk between the two processes, using yeast as a model system. Potential research directions include applying long-read sequencing to examine genome-wide replication programs, exploring how replication factors coordinate transcription and DNA replication, defining the role of transcription regulators (e.g., BET proteins) in replication initiation, and uncovering mechanisms of transcription inhibition by the S-phase checkpoint. Our research combines molecular genetics, genomics (short- and long-read sequencing), and computational biology. The specific project will be defined collaboratively with the selected candidate, with an emphasis on creativity, initiative, and demonstrated interest in gene regulation and/or DNA replication. The position is fully funded, and fellows will be encouraged and supported in pursuing independent postdoctoral funding opportunities. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Designing and conducting experiments to investigate transcription, DNA replication, and their interplay.
  • Developing and applying genomic approaches, including long-read sequencing, to study replication programs under various perturbations.
  • Exploring the role of replication factors and transcription regulators in genome stability and replication initiation.
  • Employing molecular genetics, genomics, and computational biology to address key research questions.
  • Collaborating with the PI to define and refine the research project scope.
  • Preparing manuscripts for publication and presenting research at seminars, conferences, and symposia.
  • Contributing to a collaborative and innovative laboratory environment.
  • Seeking external fellowship opportunities with mentorship and institutional support.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in a biological science or relevant area, M.D., or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of scientific theory and research.
  • Demonstrates skill in formulating and testing hypotheses.
  • Skilled in conducting scientific research experiments.
  • Strong ability to organize, interpret and present data.
  • Experience in writing technical, scientific papers and grants.
  • Effective communicator, both orally and in writing as well as strong collaboration skills.
  • Experience in providing leadership through mentoring and guiding students and junior scientists.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in studies of transcription and/or DNA replication.
  • Familiarity with yeast and/or mammalian cell lines model systems.
  • Experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, next-generation sequencing data analysis and experimentation is strongly preferred (e.g., ChIP-seq, RNA-seq, long-read sequencing etc.).
  • Demonstrated proficiency in preparing manuscripts for publication.
