Position Description
The Collegiate Seminar Program seeks an adjunct faculty member to teach the following sections in Spring 2026:
  • SEM 150-14 Looking Inward MW 2:45PM-4:00PM (3 Units)
  • SEM 150-23 Looking Inward MW 1:20PM-2:35PM (3 Units)
  • SEM 150-25 Looking Inward MW 9:15AM-10:30AM (3 Units)
  • SEM 150-26 Looking Inward TTH 8:25AM-9:40AM (3 Units)
  • SEM 250-01 Looking Outward TTH 11:40AM-12:55PM (3 Units)
  • SEM 350-12 Looking Forward TTH 7:30 PM - 8:45 PM (3 Units)
  • SEM 350-13 Looking Forward TTH 5:10PM-6:25PM (3 Units)
  • SEM 327-01 Looking Inward & Outward for Transfers TTH 1:30PM-3:10PM (4 Units)

Office Hours
In addition to teaching, instructors in the Collegiate Seminar Program are expected to hold regular office hours (a minimum of three hours a week) in order to provide students with support outside of the classroom. Instructors are also expected to participate in faculty development, including workshops, class observations, and syllabus collaboration. Course design must follow the program's common syllabus, meeting the requirements described.
Course Description
SEM 150 Looking Inward
This first seminar develops the skills of critical thinking, critical reading and writing, and shared inquiry that are foundational to Collegiate Seminar. Students learn strategies for engaging with a diversity of texts, asking meaningful questions, and effectively participating in collaborative discussions.
Reading and writing assignments are specifically designed to support students' gradual development of these strategies and skills. This seminar considers questions such as What is a person? and What is a good person?
Seminar 250: Looking Outward
Employing and building upon the strategies of critical thinking, critical reading, and shared inquiry learned in the first seminar, in this seminar students will consider questions such as What is a good society? and What is a person's place in the world?
Seminar 350: Looking Forward
Employing and building upon the strategies of critical thinking, critical reading, and shared inquiry learned in the previous seminar(s), in this seminar students will consider questions such as What is worthy of leaving as a legacy? and How should one think about the future?
Seminar 327: Looking Inward and Outward for Transfers
This seminar introduces transfer students to the core practices of Collegiate Seminar: critical thinking, close reading, analytical writing, and shared inquiry. Through reading, discussion, and writing, students build on their experiences to develop the skills needed for thoughtful academic dialogue and reflective inquiry. Students engage with diverse texts to explore essential questions: What is a person? What is a good person? What is a good society? What is a person's place in the world?
Qualifications:
Minimum:
Internal applicants (BUFM) must be currently trained seminar leaders who have successfully completed the Seminar formation process.
Outside applicants (non-BUFM) must also submit evaluations, evidence of course development, and evidence of teaching excellence.
The salary for a 3 unit course is $6,480.00 - $10,308 depending on qualifications. The salary ranges for these positions are covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the College and SEIU, Local 1021, available here.
The salary for a 4 unit course is $8,640 - $13,744 depending on qualifications. The salary ranges for these positions are covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the College and SEIU, Local 1021, available here.
All instructors must be residents of California. All coursework must be completed in the state of California.
