What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a R&D Laboratory Support Technologist to join the Flow, Acceleration, Shock, and Humidity (FASH) Lab at the Sandia National Laboratories Primary Standards Lab. This individual will be responsible for the calibration and certification of acceleration measurement and test equipment for NNSA standards laboratories and Sandia line organizations.

On any given day, you may be called to:

  • Perform vibration, mechanical shock, and static acceleration measurements and calibrations.
  • Operate and maintain manual and computer-controlled calibration systems.
  • Maintain measurement control charts and recommend improvements to resolve calibration issues and improve quality and efficiency.
  • Generate calibration certificates and reports for customers.
  • Develop and maintain computer-based and written procedures; collaborate with the project leader to implement improvements.
  • Use metrology databases and data acquisition software to capture and analyze data.

Perform work in a safe and compliant manner, including adherence to environmental and hazardous waste requirements. Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant will be required to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$63,800 - $123,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • High School diploma or equivalent plus minimum 2 years of relevant experience. Experience should include working in a laboratory environment in accordance with all procedures, policies, and practices.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with experience interacting with customers.
  • Experience working safely in a laboratory environment around mitigated hazards while following all applicable ES&H protocols.
  • Computer skills commensurate with the duties listed above and including expertise in Microsoft Office suite with an emphasis on Microsoft Excel spreadsheet generation.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DOE - Q Clearance or equivalent

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Associates degree from an ABET accredited program in engineering technology, or a bachelor's degree in other STEM field with coursework in engineering/engineering technology.
  • Experience in evaluating, assembling, disassembling and trouble-shooting electromechanical equipment such as vibration shakers, mechanical shock exciters, and centrifuges.
  • Experience developing and documenting effective processes and procedures.
  • Familiarity with the ISO 17025 standard.
  • Experience working in positions with a heavy emphasis on attention to detail.
  • Experience developing and validating calibration-related methods, processes, technical work documents and procedures.
  • Experience interfacing personal computers with measurement and test equipment.
  • Experience programming computer-controlled equipment using LabView, and be familiar with Solid Works software.
  • Strong interest in measurement standards activities including at least one year of working in a standards lab, preferably an ISO 17025 accredited lab.
  • Training and/or experience in statistics, error analysis and uncertainty calculations.
  • Experience using large, integrated software applications such as Maximo.
  • Experience and/or training in Lean Six Sigma, ISO 9001, AS9100.

About Our Team:

Department 2944, Primary Physical Standards, provides calibration support to the Nuclear Security Enterprise, including support for SNL research and production organizations. Department 2944 includes multiple projects and consists of parameters such as pressure, vacuum, leaks, volume, radiation, optics, force, mass and dimensional measurement. Primary Physical Standards, maintains a wide variety of measurement expertise and consults on technical problems, calibrates reference standards, and assists in technical guidance of the DOE/NNSA Nuclear Weapons Complex contractor standards laboratories. The overall calibration program is accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 by the NIST National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP).
