Reporting to the Vice President for Business Affairs and Treasurer, this position will lead, manage, and organize all aspects of the University’s internal audit function to include reviewing strategic, financial, operational, information technology, and management risks. An emphasis will be on risk management auditing.


Ball State University is seeking a Director of Internal Audit and Advisory Services to lead and manage all aspects of the University’s internal audit function

This position offers the potential for limited flexible work arrangements. A remote schedule is not possible.

Job Function:

Reporting to the Vice President for Business Affairs and Treasurer, this position will lead, manage, and organize all aspects of the University’s internal audit function to include reviewing strategic, financial, operational, information technology, and management risks. An emphasis will be on risk management auditing.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related discipline from an accredited institution.

Minimum Experience:

At least seven (7) years of experience in Internal Audit with a focus on risk management auditing and information systems auditing; four (4) years leading the work of other auditors and two (2) years working for public-sector and/or non-profit organizations performing internal audits gained currently or at any time. Must be knowledgeable of Ellucian Banner as demonstrated by having conducted at least one system audit on one or more of the modules.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan, direct, and monitor an effective, scalable and efficient internal audit function at the University, including the continued development of a risk-based audit approach that supports the University’s Enterprise Risk Management program. Develop risk-based annual audit plans and coordinate the work of internal audit with the work plans of the University’s Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) program, compliance program, and external assurance providers.
  • Monitor the University's internal controls that safeguard public funds and assets and minimizes incidences of fraud, waste, and abuse. Evaluate programs and business operations to ensure they are administered in compliance with federal and state laws, regulations, and other requirements. Review the effectiveness and efficiency of University operations and periodically audit the University's major systems and controls to include accounting systems and controls, information technology and security controls, and administrative systems and controls. Oversee audits of the University’s enterprise system, Ellucian Banner.
  • Direct and supervise the Internal Audit staff and ensure they have the resources and expertise to execute its audit plan. Prioritize work objectives, coach and counsel direct reports, evaluate performance, and establish professional development opportunities.
  • Prepare or monitor the preparation of comprehensive reports, interpreting and applying policies and regulations, and conducting interviews. Interact with and communicate information to senior management and the Audit and Compliance Committee.
  • Advise both the senior administrative leaders of the University and the Audit and Compliance Committee of the Board on high-risk findings and potential opportunities to improve business processes.
  • Maintain an in-depth knowledge of current internal audit philosophy and practices and compliance practices, internal controls, risk assessment, and investigative processes, especially as they relate to public sector higher education.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
